Member Posts: 21 Location: Kutztown Pennsylvania | We took our 57 belvedere (301 powerflite ) out saturday night. The car is stuck in drive. When you shift into neutral or reverse it stays in drive. I had someone push the shift buttons and can feel the inner cable moving. I applied air pressure to governor plug while tapping on tailhousing. I tried adjusting the cable also. No change.Does anyone have any idea on what the issue is? I didnt check pressures at the takeoff fittings yet but that will be my next step. Excuse me if this is a common problem. I tried searching without any luck. Also i have a working later externally cooled powerflite. If i need to swap transmissions are there any differences between the two? Which converter would i use? The air cooled or non air cooled? Thanks in advance!

Member Posts: 21 Location: Kutztown Pennsylvania | It still moves forward. It moves forward when pressing neutral as well. On a side note. I noticed on the spare trans i have laying around has different bracket for the shift cable and the neutral starter switch is facing the rear instead of sidewayd like my powerflite. Could this be an early cast iron torqueflite? It looks like pictures of a torque flight in my 1957 service manual but my buddy that sold it to me swears it was a 2 speed.

Expert Posts: 3778 Location: NorCal | You can remove the NSS (Neutral Starting Switch, you'll lose some fluid) and observe the action of the lever that contacts the NSS. The lever is driven by the shift cable.

Member Posts: 21 Location: Kutztown Pennsylvania | I removed the pan and the linkage does move. The arm for the reverse band is loose with no tension on the band.Is this supposed to be like this?

Expert Posts: 3399 Location: Chestertown, NY ( near Lake George) | Not anything to do with the reverse band, like I said if the manual valve is properly adjusted, then usually the forward clutch Pak is not releasing.

If i need to swap transmissions are there any differences between the two? Which converter would i use? The air cooled or non air cooled? Thanks in advance! ........ If this is of any help.......... You CAN'T use the later NON cooling finned convertor ( ie :- from a transmission that is cooled by cooling lines running to the lower radiator tank ) in an earlier air cooled transmission as it will eventually overheat, there's nothing to cool it. There are no cooling line ports in the air cooled transmissions to run cooling lines from so you have to use an air cooled convertor in an air cooled transmission only. Some say cooling lines can be fitted to air cooled trans but I've never got a definitive answer as to where to drill and tap for connections when I posed the question on here a few years back. ...... You CAN use an air cooled ( finned ) convertor in a later NON air cooled transmission ( cooling line to the radiator ) as an added precaution against overheating if you want to, but to take advantage of the extra cooling effect you would have to also fit the air cooled transmission bell housing which has the cooling vents in it to dissipate the hot air from the convertor. ...... That's the info I've found from research here and elsewhere though if the above info is incorrect I'm more than happy to be corrected by an expert. I'd rather you get the right info than the wrong. ......

Member Posts: 21 Location: Kutztown Pennsylvania | I cant find a definite fault in this trans besides the front pump having chunks of metal missing out of the small gear and metal everywhere. Valve body valves seem to move freely . Could the metal in the trans cause the clutches to drag and not to have neutral or reverse? I took the pump out of the cast spare torqueflite and it is different. Thank you van helsingl that info is good to know.
