This came with my 1956 Dodge Custom Royal D-500 but as far as I can tell it was for a 1957 4bbl V8 (4 1/8" throat). I don't like the look and have posted a wanted for the proper round red air cleaner with the indent to clear the PS pump/generator combo.

This is what I have to sell (shown on a 57 Dodge D-500):

Does this attach to the spark plug cover? Do you have the hardware that attachs the air cleaner to the car also? How much you looking for this??? I have the same air cleaner but mine is red and I don't have the hardware to attch it to the engine or the spark plug covers....mine is a 392, will this fit on the stock Carter carb?

It came with some kind of perforated angle bracket/leg that attaches to/sits on/by the valve cover. It fits on my Carter WCFB 4 bbl with the 4 7/32" air cleaner base circle.

It's black. I guess I should take and post a photo of it.

SOLD to a nice FL guy in San Diego.

Now to turn his $$ into a proper 56 D-500 air cleaner (still looking hint hint)

Apparently 55-56 Chrysler single 4 bbl air cleaners are just black versions of what I need. Easily painted.

A black version of this:

That is not a 57 D-500 air cleaner. It is for a 325 poly 4bbl.

Really? That is not what I understood from this photo (it looks pretty 57 and single 4 bbl hemi = 57 D-500 (not a D-501) to me):

My turn to say "really"??

The D-500 obviously uses an oval air filter and canister whereas the KDS 4bbl uses a round air filter and canister. Your own photos show that!! I think there are other dimensional differences in the canister as well.

Okay. I'm obviously the noobie here. I've had Mopars in the past but I have never seen a 57 Dodge with V8 4 bbl, either D500 or non-D500 at any point in my 65 years (the only 57 I remember had a flat head 6 like the one in the 1955 Canadian Dodge Regent that I had from 1967 to 1972). For D500s, I've only seen my 56 D500 that I acquired on Sept 15th (just over a month ago) and photos from the internet. I did not notice that the internet photo of the black air cleaner in the 57 D500 engine bay photo that I posted ended in an oval until just now. I did see that the silencer portion of the air cleaner was oval but I didn't see or notice that the end was oval. My bad.

School me again: WTH is a "KDS" 4 bbl? I know CPDD and I know WCFB but not KDS.

My buyer might want a refund.

I think, IIRC, the KDS refers to the engine #prefix.
That red AC looks just like the one on the D-500 I owned back in '62
I have some pictures somewhere of it. Geesh, I loved that car but being just a stupid kid, did not realize just what a special ride it was!
The hung over AC looks very similar if not just like the standard 57 Chrysler pieces and obviously closely related to the 300-C cleaners.

Quite a few differences as shown.

KDS. K=1957, D=Dodge and S means different things to different people! KDS usually refers to a 325 poly engine.

Thanks Greg. Now I feel bad about selling the air cleaner as a D500 air cleaner. Based on your photos, the one I sold is clearly different, i.e. round filter not the oval of the D500. Live and learn. Too soon old, too late smart. (And time is running out for me).

Not sure what my buyer will think but I will be prepared to do a full refund if he is unhappy.

Don't feel bad!! We have all made similar mistakes! A lot of Mopar parts look the same at first only to find out later that they aren't.

Not long ago, I sold a Chrysler script as a hood script and in fact it was the glovebox script!! Just gotta bite the bullet!

Umm....I was looking for a photo of a 1957 Custom Royal Lancer for a friend and came across this website re: a fully restored CRL D-500. Beautiful car. Incredible attention to detail. Interesting air cleaner. Suddenly, I am not feeling so bad anymore. Maybe there was a running change from round to oval?

I doubt that. Hemi engines " breathed" better than the polys and the oval cleaners delivered much more air than the round ones.

Nice photo. Thanks for posting it!! I think I know that car from years ago. I think it used to belong to Don Parke. Knowing Don, he would be pleased to see it nicely restored!

I've seen a hemi in a truck of that vintage and because there is enough hood height, there is no need for one of those lay-over-on-the-side-57-D500 (or just 57 V8) aircleaners. They just used big old tall oil baths (at least that is what I saw).

I should take the opportunity to say that the buyer of my air cleaner and I split the difference, i.e. I refunded half of what he paid me. It was his idea and I was okay with that.

I checked the in the trunk of my old 57 CRL for the air cleaner I knew was there under a……….few things and to my surprise the air cleaner is the same as the one you sold This 57 is equipped with the 325 poly 4bbl so Greg I certainly agree with you that the poly's were equipped with the round filter canister.I was pleasantly surprised with my find I assumed it was the same as my 325 Hemi I was going to include a picture but my phone went dead just as i was about to snap a photo. Oh well maybe Saturday I be back out to the car

Anyone recognize this air cleaner?

It looks like an oval D-500 air cleaner but it is red (not black?) and it is sitting on a Chrysler, not Dodge, hemi.

Certainly never painted red but it looks like an Imperial or NYer 392 air cleaner or a Chrysler or Dodge Spitfie one.
