This one is at the Petit Jean Mountain museum. Originally owned by Tennessee Ernie Ford. 3 onda tree car

That's a nice car but it is a 1955 Custom Royal with a 270 cu in Super Red Ram. It can't be a D500. D500s started in December 1955 and with 1956 model year cars. Somebody has added a D500 badge on to it. Could have been from a 1954 Dodge Royal Indianapolis 500 pace car. Putting a D500 badge on a car does NOT make it a D500. Sorry Ernie. Bless your pea pickin' heart.

From one of these cars (there were 701 clones with 3 badges per car):

The badge was PN 1599 218

I remember see these two locally. Who knew it was the "first" one?

Well, with engine number D500-1003, it was one of the very few first ones. (No. 3).

I think the owner who sold to Hunter R. was Joe Perry (??)

Hello Drue.
This D500 was local to you? I did not know the historical significance of it until after I bought it.

What an adventure this has become!

Around 2015, I sold a 1970 Dodge Superbee and wanted another Mopar to have fun with.
My dad always liked the '56 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer and I knew what the D500 was. Maybe I could find a D500 CRL?
A few years of searching and I found this one on an ebay auction. I bid and won it, then joined this board to learn more about D500.

That's the short version. I see Dave has responded. He and I have worked on deciphering this mysterious D500.
I hope I can answer your question and explain myself replying to his post.
Have a good'ern!

:)

Hey Dave!

Joe Perry did not sell this car to me. I bought it from a gentleman named Fred, his last name escapes me at the moment.
I believe Joe sold it to Fred. Joe only made five posts and disappeared from the forum. I cannot find him anywhere.
I would love to talk to Joe about this car's history!

From my net sleuthing and the CHS IBM card, this Custom Royal Lancer was born with engine number D500-1003.
Definitely the Third D500 production engine! How could it be the "first" one? Stay tuned.

I want to begin by thanking D500Neil (RIP) for his vast knowledge of these old Mopars!
He passed before I was a member here. I wish he was still with us. Maybe he could've helped solve the mystery?

Now, the speculation and controversy can begin(or continue)!

It seems a Joe Perry, or Peery as it's spelled on member dice5's profile, had ownership of D500-1003 and back in August 2008 posted up questions about some
fender tags he wanted decoded. Among them was a CRL with engine D500-1003. Member Dash One was his only reply.

Joe then posted his remaining four posts in another thread and got D500Neil's attention!

dice5's last post was 18 September 2008. he then vanished from the webernet.

Here's the speculation:
When regular production began,
Engine D500-1001 was ran on the dyno and never installed in a car.
D500-1002 was installed in a test mule and evaluated at the still new Chelsea Proving Grounds and never sold to the public.
D500-1003 was installed in a Custom Royal Lancer with D500 specific parts and was the first production D500 out the factory.

So, it's the Third production D500 engine, Second car, and first D500 sold to the public.
Can it be positively proven or disproven? Probably not, but it is a good speculation!

This is the earliest known D500 in existence.

I recently found the attached 56 D-500 article currently on eBay. I would like to find the original magazine because I am not paying $12.95 for one page (actually 2, there is a 57 D501 article on the back side).

I am hoping that someone knows in what magazine the article was published. If I know that I will buy the whole magazine.

I think I only found a couple of errors in the article, the bore size and maybe the hp of the D500-1.
If I am able to buy the magazine, I will scan the article and post it here.

Okay I succumbed and bought the item. I am hoping the seller will tell me (now that I bought it) which magazine or book the
article comes from.

Dave H. who has an extensive 56 Dodge literature collection (including D500s) did not recognize it other than he had
saved a very poor copy of much the same article that was on eBay back in 2010. That time it was on page 44 not 119
so he (Dave H.) thinks it was in Mopar or Muscle car book of some type.

In case my seller doesn't come through, does anybody recognize this as a page from a book and, if so, which one?

I live in Hope.

But not the town in British Columbia.

Yesterday I bought that 2 page (back to back) of D500/D501 articles. After I bought the page, I asked the seller where it came from.

He initially didn't reply but eventually he did: "American Muscle Cars 1949-92".

I went to eBay and found a few copies and bought one that was closest to me (San Francisco). Should get it next week.

When I get it, I will scan and post the pertinent pages, either in this thread or in a new thread.

This book (was a bit surprised that I didn't actually alreday have it):

Picked up the book (American Muscle Cars 1949-92) today. For US$10, it is going to provide hours of reading entertainment.

Based on the index and paging through the document, it should be a treat to read.

That said, because of some errors in the 56 D-500 article (only one page) below, I will have to take everything I read with a grain of salt.

I am going to do a separate thread regarding the errors/typos that I see and then cross-reference this posting to that posting and vice-versa.

This is the new (today) thread in which I discuss what I think are errors in the article (pg. 119) below:

There are a few reasonable accurate comments about the 56 Dodge D500 and D500-1 in an article in the June 2023 issue of
Collectible Automobile available from their back orders department:

https://collectibleautomobile.com/order-back-issues/

This is the cover:

These are the pages with the D500 and D500-1 comments:
