Maybe in case somebody has a 56 D500 wagon that they want to sell me sometime (Maybe) In the meantime, I like to share the good (stuff I am happy with) and the bad (stuff that didn't go well). In these pages, it lists seven iterations of the 56 Dodge wagon. I am hoping to learn what the body codes for all seven were. At this point, I only know 2 of them. From the above brochure listing and the Blue Book list, I have interpreted and compiled the following (if I am wrong please correct me): 56 Dodge Wagons Basics: Suburban = 2 doors, max of 2 seats/6 passengers, 3 in front, 3 in rear, no third seat Sierra = 4 doors, could be 2 seat/6 passengers or 3 seat /8 passengers (the additional 2 in the rear most area), 270 cu in poly V8, chrome headlight doors (bezels), no chrome on rear fins Custom = body-coloured headlight doors, chrome rear fins added to either the Suburban or Sierra, 315 cu in poly V8 Engines: Flat head 131 hp 230 cu in 6 cyl - Suburban only 270 cu in 2 bbl 189 hp poly Red Ram V8, Suburban and Sierra 315 cu in 2bbl 218 hp Super Red Ram poly V8, Custom Suburban and Custom Sierra 315 cu in 4 bbl 230 hp Super-Powered Super Red Ram poly optional from the initial introduction 315 cu in 4 bbl 260 hp D500 hemi optional after approximately May 1956 (Dr. Desoto owned one for a time) Combinations and permutations from the 56 Dodge Wagon Brochure: 6 cylinder Suburban example: Code 647 2dr 6 cyl with standard transmission 8 cylinder Suburban, 270 cu in V8 8 cylinder, Sierra, 4dr, 2 seats/6 passengers 8 cylinder, Sierra, 4dr, 3 seats/8 passengers 8 cylinder Custom Suburban. Rumour has Code 857 where V8, 2dr, auto trans, 2 seats, body-coloured head light bezel/doors, chrome fins 8 cylinder Custom Sierra 6 passenger, example Code 858: V8, 4 dr, auto trans, 2 seats (Doctor Desoto's Custom Sierra D500 wagon had this code (see below) 8 cylinder Custom Sierra 8 passenger So I am still looking for build tag (cowl tag) or IBM card examples of the five or six wagons that I am missing. Yesterday while going through some D500 engine numbers, I re-found a cowl tag for a 3 seat Custom Sierra (which happened to have a D500 hemi). The body code was 859. On that basis, I am adding some wild @ss guesses (those followed with (??)) So now we have: Combinations and permutations from the 56 Dodge Wagon Brochure: 6 cylinder Suburban example: Code 647 2dr 6 cyl with standard transmission 8 cylinder Suburban, 270 cu in V8 Code =847 (??) 8 cylinder, Sierra, 4dr, 2 seats/6 passengers Code = 848 (??) 8 cylinder, Sierra, 4dr, 3 seats/8 passengers Code = 849 (??) 8 cylinder Custom Suburban. Rumour has Code 857 (??) where V8, 2dr, auto trans, 2 seats, body-coloured head light bezel/doors, chrome fins 8 cylinder Custom Sierra 6 passenger, example Code 858 : V8, 4 dr, auto trans, 2 seats (Doctor Desoto's Custom Sierra D500 wagon had this code) 8 cylinder Custom Sierra 8 passenger as above but with the 3rd seat, Code 859 So I am still hoping to find more info to confirm or correct these guesses. I would love to see what it says about the 56 Dodges. As stated above, any of the codes that I followed with "(??)" are purely speculative and need to be confirmed with real data. That said, 56 Dodge wagons seem to be very few and far between these days and the prospect of finding one on the internet with a corresponding photo of its cowl data tag is less than likely. As for non-wagons, I thought that you saw my 56 Dodge Body Code thread. I would love to see what it says about the 56 Dodges. Just picked up a set of 57, 58 and 59 Branham reference books. The go back 5 years from the date on the cover, i.e. 59 covers 54 to 59. I posted the 55-59 Dodge info in another thread: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=72988&... Pg. 39 from the 1959 Branham reference book shows that, indeed, for 1956, the Suburban and Sierras were base on the Coronet series and that the Custom Suburban and Custom Sierras were based on the Royal series. Something like this: :) Hi Dave, You might have problems locating Branham publications in Canada as they dealt only with cars and trucks for the American market after WW II. And, actually, you will have problems finding much in Canadian libraries before 1980. Both the Vancouver Public Library and the Toronto Reference Library had items for Canadian cars. Both had the Canadian edition of Wards Automotive Yearbook (1953 to 1960) as well as the American edition. Both libraries had editions of Sanford-Evans Motor Vehicle Databook, covering cars sold in Canada back to 1935. And VPL had service manuals for pre-1990 cars, car radio schematics, and a lot more. Sometime around 2010, or a little earlier, everything before 1980 in both libraries was tossed out (at best) or burned (at worst). I know the Canadian historical marine libraries had much of their contents destroyed around that time. Anyway, the only library in Canada that I know of that has Branham, Sanford-Evans, Red Book, NADA used car (yellow cover), Canadian Wards (I photocopied them twenty years ago), American Wards (1948 to 1986 with a few missing issues) are the bookcases behind me. I have been acquiring these books going to swap meets and checking eBay over the past couple of decades. Also have a number of Canadian publications covering the late 1920's into the 1990's. Anything I can help with, feel free to ask. Will see what I have. In the meantime I'll copy the 1956 Dodge section for you. Bill Vancouver, BC | ||

After my last post before Christmas, I searched for Branham books on ebay. I found and bought a package with 57, 58 and 59 Branham Automobile Reference Books (BARBs) in it. Looks like the books cover all domestic cars and trucks for a five year period going back from the date of the book, i.e. The 59 book goes back to 54. Lots of info in them.
