Extreme Veteran Posts: 395 Location: upstate new york | Pretty sure I'm going to open a snake pit with this question, but here it goes....What would you pay for a complete interior re-do? Headliner, door panels, kick panels, rear deck, seats re-done and new carpet??? I'm not looking for a show car, but want something nice to tool around in...just curious what others have paid to have this done....For those of you who say "why don't you do it yourself?" Unfortunately my 60 year car body is in better shape than mine these days...some ideas on costs would be appreciated... Thanks, billy

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | I am having a hard time finding someone willing and able to deal with removing my front and rear windshields (and the trim), installing a headliner, putting the windows back with new rubber, and re-installing the trim. No shop seems capable or willing.

No shop seems capable or willing. I am going to need a new headliner at some point (unless I can figure out a way to "paint" or "tint" the existing one). So thinking replacement, I have an original Mopar service manual that describes the installation of the headliner, including the need to have the rear window out. HOWEVER, I have been looking at the gasket on my 56 Dodge rear window and I *think* that there is enough of a lip and the rubber is pliable enough that it would be possible to tuck that end of the headliner UNDER the window gasket (with an appropriate glue) and AVOID removing the rear window, etc. The front edge is under removable metal trim. Work-arounds are going to be my life with this car. NOT opening cans of worms whenever they can be avoided with some ingenuity.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1102 Location: Hayward, Calif | I have the wife's 59 Dodge at the upholstery shop now for a complete upholstery job, including carpet the trunk and cover the spare tire. This guy does really good work but is a bit pricey. Quoted $4900. At this point and time in my life I can afford this. Was a time when I wouldn't have been able to. There are other upholstery shops in the area who could've done it cheaper. But this my wife's dream car. This makes her happy and gets her active in the car hobby. So I guess what's her smile and happy dance worth ???? Ya only go around once so ya gotta get all the gusto ya can !!! Jerry

Expert Posts: 1207 Location: Ponder, TX | The non-stock bucket seats, rear seat and door panels for my '56 Plymouth cost $1700 and they included enough vinyl for me to cover kick panels, package shelf and console myself. Premium cut pile carpet material was another $250, and I don't yet have a price on the headliner, but I will be making it myself. Edited by GaryS 2017-04-17 4:50 PM

Member Posts: 9 Location: Bellingham, WA | I just had the headliner in my 59 Imperial 4 Dr hardtop replaced, without pulling the windshield or back glass. The glass guy was unwilling to pull them for fear of damaging the seals or the glass. Upholstery shop installed tack strips instead. Looks great!

Veteran Posts: 149 Location: Iowa | As for the original question, I guess every car is done to each person's taste. Some people want the $5000 total package some are ok with a shag carpet remnant on the floor and an off the shelf Bench seat cover. Some times as in my case the interior was basically gutted when I got it so there was no carpet or headliner to begin with. I plan to do it myself using some online tutorials. I am sure it wont be 100 points but I too am just looking for a nice weekend hobby. To each their own. ps. I am glad to hear that tack strips can make do instead of removing the window. I was not looking forward to finding someone to try and do that.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 395 Location: upstate new york | Is it just me, or does SMS take forever to do anything including responding to a inquiry? I got samples quick enough, but i asked them a couple questions on price and turn around a month ago...is this typical from them? do they take forever? Is it worth the wait? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, billy

Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | Billy - check the SMS threads under vendors, they are fairly notorious for being super-slow in some cases. Where are you upstate NY? I'm in Binghamton. There's a really excellent upholstery place here, J & R., they do really nice work.

No shop seems capable or willing. They're afraid of glass breakage. The upholstery shop I used for years simply pushed the glued ends of the headliner fabric into the rubber using a dulled putty knife. Never had one come loose.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | That would be great except that my rubber is hard as a rock. If you attempt to move it, it will crumble into pieces. So it really needs to be done at the same time.

Expert Posts: 3777 Location: NorCal | In that case, the safest way is to cut the gasket to make the glass removal less risky and install the glass with a new gasket before taking to the upholstery shop or take it to be upholstered with the glass/gasket removed .

Extreme Veteran Posts: 395 Location: upstate new york | Ordered carpet, windlace, kick panels and door panels.....will go back for headliner once i see the right one and seat material once i figure out how much i need...they said the carpet, windlace and seat materials would be quick, but the door panels will be 2-3 months....i'm ok with that...

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | Expect 1-2 years on the door panels. If you are OK with that, then you'll be fine. But let us know when they arrive, if perhaps they have gotten better than before. Edited by Powerflite 2018-05-25 2:14 PM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 360 | The region plays a factor also. For a 57 2 door imperial Here in SoCal I am getting hit for 7k to do the front and rear seats, visors, door panels, kick panels for a full custom interior (custom foam on the seats to give more of a bucket feel and appearance also). Headliner is easy to do so I did that part and will buy a carpet on ebay. Interior is by far the biggest expense I have had so far. Some nice engine parts come in second.

And it is the part of the restoration that will typically die first. You can keep the paint nice if you keep the car in the garage, but if you drive the car on a regular basis, the interior will surely degrade within a decade or so.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | As some of the older players here know, I did the interior for my dodge myself, as much as I enjoyed doing it (sure beat fixing rust) it was painful and I would pay someone to do it, but here to do a total interior in whatever materials that are available will cost north of 5k and be closer to 10k+ Personally, as much as having the factory materials in the car would be nice, the extorsion prices attached to it and the horror stories of years waiting for the stuff to arrive means its whatever's going for me. But I am not wrapped up in bringing a car to showroom original either Good luck

Veteran Posts: 236 Location: Morgan Hill, CA | I just ordered the materials to do mine and it was $1,925. It's a convertible so in addition to the seats, door panels, side panels, kick panels, and dash there will be extra material for the convertible well liner and convertible boot and a couple extra yards for just in case. This pricing does not include carpet which Ive already done. It does include doing the Desoto embossing on the front and rear seat and also the heat embossed seams for the seats and door panels. I'm not in a hurry so I'm fine with whenever it arrives. Edited by dlyle 2018-08-01 7:22 PM

Veteran Posts: 111 Location: Aurora, Co | Just got a quote for my 56 Desoto Firedome 4 door. Includes Kick Panels, 4 Door Cards, Package Tray, Headliner, Visors, Carpet refresh, Rear Seat & Front Buckets (from a 71 New Yorker). all Black & Red vinyl. Total was $3K. I was expecting 5K. I've seen 4 interiors he has done & they look great. I wasn't looking for Concours Resto just a street cruiser but I wanted something nice to match the paint job. He's a small shop but he does Upholstery, Marine, Convert Tops & all kinds of 1 off stuff. Depends on where you are & who does the work. Later

Veteran Posts: 111 Location: Aurora, Co | So, here's my latest issue. I'm having the Headliner replaced & I also have "hard as a rock" Rear Window seal. I started with Steele Rubber. They have Windshield Gaskets but no Rear Window Gaskets. Searched on Ebay & have found a Rear Window Gasket but it's for a 2 Door Hard Top. Mine is a 4 door Sedan. THey give a Replaces Mfgr Part Number: 1620173 - 1620473. I don't have a Parts List so I don't know if the Gasket is for 2 Dr HD only or if it would also fit a 4 Dr Sedan. I have a NAGS for 56 Chrysler Desoto & the Rear Window Glass is B392 for a 4 door & B390 for a 4 door. Could someone with a parts list check these part numbers & let me know if the Gasket Part Numbers would interchange? Since the Gasket on Ebay is approx $200 I'm hesitant to proceed but my interior guy will be starting next week.

Veteran Posts: 111 Location: Aurora, Co | Howdy folx. Sorry for the long delay but I got the car back from the interior shop in Sept. The work is superb. THe REar Window Gasket fear was unjustified. Since the interior is installed from top to bottom the headliner was the first step. I located a product called Rubber Rejuvinator. I hurried out to his shop to apply it before I was getting in the way. When I got there they had already installed the Headliner & tucked it under the Gasket with no problem. They had parked her rear facing the blazing sun. A little massaging & it tucked right under. They used a strip of foam to push the cloth back into the teeth in the rear window frame. Looks great & no wrinkles. I'll use the Rubber Rejuvinator on on the outside of the gasket to help me get the Stainless Steel trim around the rear glass. The rubber on the outside is hard & resists allowing the trim to slide into the groove in the gasket. So, Fear Not. A little heat & some massage can help even hard gaskets. Locate the Rubber Rejuvinator as aq Plan B. Later. Bob Tittle

Extreme Veteran Posts: 371 | Welp this is again old thread. Well my '56 Imperial's interior was totally trash after years of critters and mother nature. The original estimate was $7,800.00 but they would not sign to hold to that. So after the carpet, kick panels, upper pillar stuff, rear uppers, trunk and head liner it came out $10,738.82. The kick panels were rather costly since they have 2 types of material as well as the trim work in and around. Basically I wound up with a brand new factory interior in a 1956 Chrysler Imperial. The interior shop brought all the goodies in a van and did it right here at my house, except sand blasting the seat frames and springs. Strange this is for my Lil Red for them to make and put on new seat covers, with steaming and repairing the foam is the same price if I had them install factory re make covers, $300.00. The way I look at the seats in my '56 it was like have custom made foldable twin hospital beds. Labor for '56 was $3,492.00 of the total.
