This is interesting. The body is a Desoto, Trim and three-piece rear window look like they're from a Buick, tail lights are from a 57 Chrysler, and the grille appears to be from a 53 Desoto. The trim looks kind of silly since it doesn't run the full length of the car. It's like he bought the trim without measuring and just went with it anyways.

I've seen worse customs. This one isn't terrible. Not that I am going to run out and buy it though. I think a darker color would suit it better than the bright red.

It needs some help, for sure. But it can be worked with. I'm concerned that there are no photos or words that describe the true condition of the car - underhood, trunk, and interior.

A buyer has a lot of options at 16k, not sure this one is going to get a lot of attention at that price for how much it has been personalized.

The roof doesn't bother me too bad. I'm sure you're all aware it came straight from a '57 Buick.

As for the trim ending a little early on the fender, it reminds me of the '58 Firedome....

The front view is an improvement over the stock Desoto. I liked the front and side view, but didn't think too highly of the rear view. The 3 piece rear window doesn't quite fit here. Jerry

Ahhh . . . that's the rub. Back when this kind of custom was all the rage (50' and 60's) many "customizers" would take bit from here and parts from there, cobbling up some pretty scary frankencars.

The hard part is doing all that borrowing and making it look like it belongs together. When you can do that, then you're a real Customizer.

I don't particularly care for this one, but what bugs me is the paint isn't even shiny.

I agree. That said I think it can be made to work with that grille, but that bumper and the turn signals need to be redesigned; there's just too much space between the headlamps and the bumper. It's kinda bears a vague resemblance to a 55 Chevy, if the 55 Chevy had quad headlights.

The rest of the car except the chopped top doesn't work. Those triple windows are especially bad since they were designed for a car with a higher roofline.

To me, when you can look at a custom and tell what car the parts were borrowed from, it's a failure.

As for that black 57 Chrysler, we've discussed it here many times before but I'll say it again - the most successful and most significant custom of all time. I have no doubt that car would sell for more $$$ than any other FL car in existence, if it were sold.

I know Inman 57 Chrysler is the best example of how to customize a fwl car so far... and its not fair to compare... and yes that Inman's car would sell for a ton, that explains all the copies of Inmans car.

Not sure about the "bullet" shell grills... blech.

IMHO I could improve on the grill though, maybe a grill using flat thinner bars instead of round tubes... other than that's its darn near perfect.

the original 57 Chrysler grill is pretty custom in its own right. Chrysler started using "floating" grills in the 57 Plymouth and 57 Chrysler. (cant "really" see the grid up and down behind I mean).

I think maybe only European cars had used anything like it?

I suspect the Inman car, with its fairly straightforward tube-bar grille, received that grille in part just because it wouldn't have seemed right to leave it stock. But, it looks good regardless. Plus, it's also a fair guess that in 2018 that grille looks 'old hat' but in 1960 it was still fairly original.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Inman car sell for over $1M if it were to go to auction. I know if I were a fat cat like Jay Leno or Ashlee Simpson (lol) I'd pay that much for it.

As for the Desoto mish-mash, the three glass rear window screams "50's Chevy pickup" to me.

I don't know about a million ... but yeah customs of the day were about the round bars. They didn't have a huge amount of options back them.

Here is another variation on the tube grille theme. Looks great, but I would like to see the sides treated to a similar treatment instead of the stock ends. Looks unfinished.

not in my book. looks like pried open with a crowbar, or a weird smyle. the full width 58 version looks cleaner and emphasizes the width of the car.

The 57 Chrysler was rated the best looking higher priced car by all the car magazines and reviewer and people choices... The Plymouth won low priced car.

Gotta agree. It takes the best of the high and low priced Mopars and combines them. The Dodge was wild looking while the Chrysler was pretty modest. You get the modest sheet metal of the Chrysler with the wild looking Dodge style rocket-esque tail lights mashed together perfectly. Every line on the 57 Desoto works perfectly with the rest of the car. Nothing on it looks out of place.

Can't wait to see what this franken-car sells for though. Already has 28 bids!

I'm glad you guys are leaving the Chryslers to people like me. The '57 Chrysler is by and large, my favorite car of all time. Combine that with the 392 or 354, and it only adds to it's appeal. I do like the '57 DeSoto color sweep, but they are all the same. Whereas, Chrysler has 3 to choose from, and they are all great. I wouldn't mind having one of each of them. The front hood emblem & fender top ornaments are probably my least favorite part of the '57 DeSoto. Makes the front end look a little frumpy. Don't get me wrong, though, I do like the '57 DeSoto, but it isn't by any means my favorite. My tastes align with the '58 DeSoto better and that's why I purchased one of them. But the '57 Chrysler is definitely the king of '57, IMO.

Edit: I forgot to add that the gap between the front bumper and upper fender has always bugged me a little on the DeSoto. Chrysler did a much better job of integrating the bumper into the fenders than DeSoto did. This is especially true with the New Yorker trim.
