I do that for almost 30 years, engine still runs like new, drive almost daily, so it is safe: mix gasoline with teflon grease (slick50 etc), looks like milk and give a couple of shots into the tank each time when I fill up. Clogs paper filters but not the plastic one in the tank. So the oe tank filter and the Holley filter mesh in the carb is all i use. Works without any problems.

Expert Posts: 3034 Location: N.W. Fla. | For the most part it seems to be unnecessary, the epidemic of older cars having burned ex valves doesn't seem to have happened. Some FL engines came with hardend valves & seats, some didn't. What do you have?

Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | Burned valves could very well be caused by a (small) vacuumleak in the intake or carb-gasket, making a cylinder run lean, or a lean running carb all together. Or someone hooked a PCV system (if fitted) onto a fitting located on an intake runner, again making 1 cylinder run lean. My opinion is: By the time the valveseats are possibly worn by lack of lead(substitute), the heads themselves need to be rebuild anyway. So why not save it all in one repair? And then again, besides a few enthusiasts, who is actually daily driving their FWLKer these days and rack up considerable miles every year? Edited by BigBlockMopar 2018-05-21 3:52 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7400 Location: northern germany | Burned valves? What in the lead supplement could prevent that? I'm with BigBlock here. At least I never heard about that. Edited by 1960fury 2018-05-21 4:32 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | our cars run a low rpm... unless your drag racing/high rpm or running 300k a year i wouldnt worry about it or use a lead substitute. It imparts similar lubrication on high heat to the valves like lead oxide without ruining a catalytic converter and dumping lead. https://www.redlineoil.com/lead-substitute https://www.amazon.com/Motor-Medic-M5012-12PK-Lead-Substitute/dp/B00... Lead was initially added for anti knock.. Lead increases the octane rating of gas... but it also dumps lead oxide on the valves which helps wear. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/do-i-need-a-lead-substit... https://www.wired.com/2013/01/looney-gas-and-lead-poisoning-a-short-...

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7807 Location: Williams California | I've never personally used it, and I drive my old cars on very long trips. I was told years ago, that most problems from unleaded fuel use in older cars, were those cars used for long high speed drives, and drag racing where engine temps raise very quickly. This info was from an engine builder that raced in the Reno/Sacramento area in the seventies to the early nineties. ---John
