Hello, first off apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but a quick forum search turned up no results. As many may know, the state of CA requires a VIN inspection for cars coming in with out-of-state titles. They need to see the VIN in two separate places on the vehicle. If they can't find two, it's a much larger hassle and involves bringing the car to the Highway Patrol, etc. I'm looking at a '59 DeSoto and wanted to see if a second VIN stamping (such as on a frame rail or body panel) exists.

Again, apologies if this has been previously discussed.

Based on 1958 info, I would have said that the VIN is only on the driver's door jamb (as shown below). However, based on this AACA thread, there is supposedly a VIN stamped somewhere secret on the frame (or ??). Somebody should know.

Doc? Ed?

Thanks for the info. Yes on my '64 Dodge it was stamped on the right frame rail. Just trying to save the hassle of the CHP inspection, as the car is inop and only certain CHP offices do the service (although if you are restoring an old CHP car, they will come to you).

VINs for the 1959 Desoto are M(1959) 4 (Desoto) series (Sweep 1, dome 3, flite 5, SW 7, Adv 9) plant (1 Jefferson-Detroit; 2 Dodge Main Detroit sweeps; 4 LA sweeps) so a Firesweep might be M412-1xxxxx or M414-1xxxxx; a Flite would be M451-1xxxxx and so forth

There should be a metal plate by the driver's side door hinge with the VIN for all cars except Detroit made sweeps top line would be year/car/series/plant eg M451 lower line number 1xxxxx

Detroit sweeps had two open holes for plate; however, no plate installed

VIN for Detroit sweeps is on top line of data plate by passenger's side hood hinge

Data plates for others may have a full VIN or just the 6 digit production number on the top line

Not fully established that a second location for the VIN exists

Data plates provide additional cross reference and can be translated on this forum
