Member Posts: 9 | Hello, first off apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but a quick forum search turned up no results. As many may know, the state of CA requires a VIN inspection for cars coming in with out-of-state titles. They need to see the VIN in two separate places on the vehicle. If they can't find two, it's a much larger hassle and involves bringing the car to the Highway Patrol, etc. I'm looking at a '59 DeSoto and wanted to see if a second VIN stamping (such as on a frame rail or body panel) exists. Again, apologies if this has been previously discussed.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Based on 1958 info, I would have said that the VIN is only on the driver's door jamb (as shown below). However, based on this AACA thread, there is supposedly a VIN stamped somewhere secret on the frame (or ??). Somebody should know. Doc? Ed? http://forums.aaca.org/topic/101712-vin-plates/ Edited by 56D500boy 2018-05-24 12:42 PM (VINnumberLocation.jpg) Attachments ---------------- VINnumberLocation.jpg (135KB - 218 downloads)

Member Posts: 9 | Thanks for the info. Yes on my '64 Dodge it was stamped on the right frame rail. Just trying to save the hassle of the CHP inspection, as the car is inop and only certain CHP offices do the service (although if you are restoring an old CHP car, they will come to you).

Extreme Veteran Posts: 384 Location: Hershey PA | VINs for the 1959 Desoto are M(1959) 4 (Desoto) series (Sweep 1, dome 3, flite 5, SW 7, Adv 9) plant (1 Jefferson-Detroit; 2 Dodge Main Detroit sweeps; 4 LA sweeps) so a Firesweep might be M412-1xxxxx or M414-1xxxxx; a Flite would be M451-1xxxxx and so forth There should be a metal plate by the driver's side door hinge with the VIN for all cars except Detroit made sweeps top line would be year/car/series/plant eg M451 lower line number 1xxxxx Detroit sweeps had two open holes for plate; however, no plate installed VIN for Detroit sweeps is on top line of data plate by passenger's side hood hinge Data plates for others may have a full VIN or just the 6 digit production number on the top line Not fully established that a second location for the VIN exists Data plates provide additional cross reference and can be translated on this forum

Member Posts: 9 | Sorry for the delayed reply and thanks for the follow-up. I wasn't much concerned with the car's legitimacy in this case, but rather just trying to expedite the DMV process. Unfortunately I let that '59 get away from me, but very helpful to know for future reference.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9663 Location: So. Cal | For future reference, know this: Verifying the second VIN on a car made before 1970 is not required in California. If the DMV asks you to take it to the CHP, they will just try to find the same non-existant second VIN and will be as unsuccessful as the first try at the DMV. But if you talk to someone at the DMV who knows what they are doing, you will find that you don't need to verify the second VIN on older cars. Just insist on talking with someone else who knows what they are doing. Unfortunately, it has come down to the point that you need to know what is and isn't required for these cars because many DMV employees are clueless. Edited by Powerflite 2018-06-29 6:42 PM
