Expert Posts: 1316 Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | Hi everyone, I have a very slow OEM starter on my '58 318, and it is sometimes difficult to achieve hot starts. I want to upgrade to a mini starter with more torque and more rpm. This one has been on eBay for quite a while : https://www.ebay.com/itm/1957-1958-Dodge-Plymouth-12-Volt-Replacemen... But do you have other recommendations ? Other brands or tips ? Thank you.

Expert Posts: 1316 Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | It seems to me that another type of adjustable mini-starter was on the market for our 318, with a dozen or so possibilities to rotate it to find the correct position. But I'm unable to find it ...

If the starter is in good working condition, then it's just a matter of heat sink and that can be cured by larger wires to the starter. You would need AWG 2 (35mm²) or even better AWG 1 (50mm²) You can easily check if the wire are too small by using starter wires parallell from battery negative to the engine and from battery positive to the starter realy and one extra from the starter relay to the starter. Most of the mini-starters i've seen is made in China - probably not worth the money

Expert Posts: 1316 Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | Hi Sven, First of all, for reasons unknown to me, my current starter is a clean and serviced MDM-6001, which is L6 Powerflite only. That's why I think it's underpowered, even if the technical data from the FSM show that it's not very far from a MDL-6004, which I should have (318 V8). It really is slow in starting. So slow I should make a video. MDM-6001 draws 210 amps at stall (2,9kW@13,8V) and cranks at 3600 rpm max (but it never reaches that speed in my car I can tell you) MDL-6004 draws 225 amps at stall (3,1kW@13,8V - 7% more) and cranks at 3400 rpm max. I'm not sure about the size of my current cables. I think they are AWG 4 but I'm not more certain than that. I'll check. But even if they're AWG 4, this size is still OK for that kind of amperage, following https://www.wirebarn.com/Wire-Calculator-_ep_41.html Although I should say that the cables are very hot after some slow starting sessions. Regular Posts: 87 | Try looking here, if you haven't found a suitable starter for your 58. https://www.qualitypowerauto.com/catalog.php?item=600 I've bought two of these starters, and they fit and work well. Glenn Four 56 Plymouths 58 Dodge D300
