I had new shocks and some other minor work done to my 1955 Chrysler St. Regis this week at a shop I trust. The work was completed. The car has a powerflight 2 speed transmission. The mechanic put the car in reverse, backed the car out of the shop and took it for a test drive. Everything was fine. He returned to the shop, pulled the car into the building to park it overnight. He shifted the car into reverse to back into the parking slot and nothing happened. No clank, no bang no nothing... but the car would not move in reverse. They pushed the car out of the shop and drove it around the block. The car shifts fine in forward gears but has no reverse. The shop manual does not specifically address this situation. Has anyone encountered this specific problem and if so what was the fix??

People always tell me that before I put my Powerflite in Reverse, I should put my foot on the brake and put it in D for a few seconds which apparently makes sure that the fluid is pumped up and pressurized. *THEN* go to R, otherwise "some damage may occur to the Reverse bands (or whatever)".

This might be your problem. I don't know.

I've followed this procedure and it has eliminated the "CLANG" when going directly from N to R first thing in the AM.

The Reverse band is used only for Reverse so the problem lies there, either the band is out of adjustment or broken or there is a servo problem. Pull the pan to investigate further.

If the cable adjustment wasn't molested during the other "minor work" it's not likely the problem.

Correct, the band and or adjustment can only be accessed pan off, it would. not normally be an adjustment issue to happen so suddenly. Either the apply strut fell out, the band broke where the strut connects, or the servo seals failed. This assumes no issues with the cable or valve body linkage. But if forward is good, that is unlikely.

Thanks for the response Shep. This sounds like a sensible idea. I had not heard suggestion. My guess is the reverse band has failed from old age.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the response! We checked the linkage and all looks good. We found a transmission shop with 3 generations of transmission experts from the same family. It will be a couple of weeks before they can look at it but I am hopeful that they will be able to resolve the problem.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the response.....None of the recently done work would have had any effect on the transmission so I am guessing it is an age related failure. Hopefully the 3 generation transmission experts my local shop found will be able to sort it out for me.

Thanks again for the your thoughts.

I think the PN of the reverse band is 1484 153. Apparently that was superceded to 1881 799.

On that basis, there is a band and a strut at Hilltop:

Along with the other failure possibilities, band link breakage is also a possibility because line pressure increases by a factor of three (to about 250 psi) in Reverse.

Can a reverse band strut that is broken like that be successfully repaired?

Here is more info about the Powerflite reverse band and strut:
