Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10270 Location: Lower Mainland BC | For who knows why, I have it in my head that I want to add the 55 or 56 Dodge C-pillar 1599 544 medallion to my 56 Dodge Custom Royal sedan (that didn't get the badge). I've been chasing various folks who might or might not have one or two for sale. But nothing came through. Reference: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=67891&... Sometime before Christmas, I found one on eBay. But just one. In lieu of having two, I decided to try making a second (or third or fourth) for fun. To this end, I have acquired a two-part silicone molding putty and a two part casting resin. I wanted to play around with this before Christmas but it didn't happen due to company and issues with my daily driver (flooded Engine Management computer). The "FUN" happened today. The results are less than perfect but given that it was my first time with both the molding putty and the casting resin, I am not too concerned. I can clean up the result with a bit of trimming and sanding, followed by painting. Here are some photos as I went through the process. All very simple to use materials. 50/50 mixtures. Only a few minutes working time with the molding putty and the casting resin I chose sets up in 20 minutes or so (going from clear to solid white). I watched the appropriate Youtube videos a few times before starting so I had a clue. I think I will give the original a better cleaning and make a new mold tomorrow (I have lots of molding putty and a shed load of casting resin left). Expert 5K+ Posts: 5095 | I don't like the smooth on stuff, its kind of high priced and more for the hobbyist level(goes bad real quick also), I use Polytek and some alumilite molding stuff now.

I haven't heard of either of those. I got what I got at a local fibreglass supply store that I have bought from before, e.g. fiberglass, carbon fibre and resins. I'll look for Polytek and Alumilite.

Expert Posts: 1231 Location: SWITZERLAND | Nice the Medaillon you reproduced, Dave. For best results I would restore the original with filler for a flat surface of the master model. Your 56 Dodge Custom Royal side badges, you asked once, can be done the same way. Then spray with Liquid Chrome and finally fill with colors. - SERGE -

I didn't say but the original badge is held tight and flat to the white base board (a scrap piece of MDF/Melamine shelving) so the mold is flat and the case part is solid and flat. I intend to spray with a "liquid Gold" type paint (like a Chrome paint but only in Gold) and then add the read and black bits by hand. But first I am going to clean up the original a bit more so the little stars on the bars and knights helmet detail shows up better. Then I will make a new mold and cast again. Mike: I will look for your paint suggestions. I did look at Aluminite yesterday but I don't understand why it would be better.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5095 | I like polytek stuff better, its top notch. Well better than alumalite. There is another one I cant remember but its good stuff. You normally cant sit on this stuff very long regardless.

The emblem looks great. I have always wondered if this method would work for the thin cursive tags You can use regular bondo for casting, too. Thin it out with acetone (too much and it stays gummy), mix in your hardener, then pour away. You can also do the same trick with filler to emulate a polyester primer-surfacer. Thin out your filler enough to spray, then mix the hardener in, and spray out of a spraygun (1.8 tip is ideal). If you're casting, the 19.99 stuff will work fine, but it's best to get something that's tack free (or add styrene+wax additive). Adding the acetone into filler makes it skin over worse than normal, however if you're not planning on sanding/filing it doesn't really matter.
