Greetings,

I am looking for info on where to find the correct fuel pump for a 1956 Desoto Firedome wagon. It has the 330 Hemi. I've tried 2 thus far:

First I ordered one from Kanter which did not work. I guess there are 2 types of arms on the pump, one that is straight and one that has a bend on the end. Although they assured me the one I had should work it did not. Best of all they wouldn't take it back.

Next I tried one from hemi hotheads. This pump was made for a 318 Chrysler but they sell an "adapter" the enables you to use it on the Hemis. After closer inspection it seems the adapter would put the pump to far off the block thereby not letting the eccentric actuate it correctly. It did work for a bit but seems like there is not enough pressure and little fuel is getting to the carb.

So I guess I'm asking is 1) what is the exact pump I need and 2) where can I find one. Ebay has quite bit on there but trying just to narrow it down. I suppose the other option is some sort of electric pump but not sure how to proceed on that one.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance, this is a great site.

Until somebody with a 331 replies, you can help yourself by downloading the 55-58 Mopar Parts Catalogue from Mymopar.com and searching for the PN for the 56 331 fuel pump. Once you have that, then you can search eBay with the PN.

Good luck.

You need a Carter 2241S. Chrysler part number 1637366. Best is to try to find a rebuildable core. Then use modern gaskets to refurbish. 55-6 Desoto.

Having just finished a 330 rebuild I can say that an LA pump is a direct interchange without any adapter in the mix. I also checked the 341 cover and it is the same.
I mounted the stock pump to the front cover and marked the sweet spot on the inside, then mounted an LA pump and the lever arm was in the near exact same position.

Jack, here's a full picture of one from a '56 DeSoto 330 hemi for your reference. Ron has the correct numbers in his reply.

What are the pressure readings on the later pump ? 55-6 Desotos require 5-7 lbs. max. My concern is that the later pumps push fuel thru at a higher pressure.

As noted, the LA pump is for any 318-340-360 (pre magnum) engines. I have given up trying to post pics on this forum but have added a new page to my website to show
two early pumps and a 340 for comparison using the early housing. The 341 housing mounts the pumps in the same position; I had a relatively clean 291 housing for the photos.
