I have a '57 DeSoto. The rear end in this car has the keyed axle shafts, correct? Can the more modern flange style axle shafts be installed in the old axle housings? Does anything interchange between these old keyed axles and the 60's-70's 8&3/4" flanged axles?

A,, E body 1970-1974 8 3/4 will bolt right in It will give you great brakes on the back and you can hook up the emergency brakes to the rear wheels

So does anything interchange between a 1957 8&3/4 and a 1970 E-body 8&3/4?

The E-body rear will work but the pinion angle is wrong, the '65-'69 C-body is the same width and has the correct pinion angle.

It is possible to swap just the axle shafts by using the Green bearings with custom axles and modifying the '65-later brake backing plates. Doctor Diff might be able to supply the axles and bearings.

That there is the reason why this isn't usually done. Custom axles are expensive so that you are typically better off just swapping out an entire rear end. Green bearings aren't as critical to getting the exact length of axle as are the tapered bearings, but you typically can't find a set of used axles without a rear housing to go with it, so it doesn't make sense to pursue this approach either.
