Since my A-466 cast iron pig torqueflite swap will require new/shorter drive shaft, I am looking for one from a 56 Dodge (or Chrysler??) that I could modify. I wouldn't need the whole thing, probably just one foot from the front and one foot from the rear. (I would get a local drive shaft shop to make the shorter drive shaft from those bits).

My 56 Dodge D500 drive shaft is (I think), the same as one from a 4 bbl 56 Dodge 315 poly car, i.e. 4.0" ball and trunion front bit and "regular" Hotchiss cross U-joint at the rear (not another ball and trunion). If I had those bits to play with I could create a new shorter driveshaft that would look period factory, rather than having a more modern (and not age appropriate)front Hotchiss and sliding spline type drive shaft.

I tried John F. at Big M and he thought he had what I am looking for, but, it turns out that he does not.

The front Ball and Trunion U-joint has, I think, a 1635 099 housing that has a 4" flange. As far as I can tell the 1635 099 housing was used on the 56 Fury, the 56 Custom Royals with the 315 engine, the 56 Desoto Firedome and the 56 Chrysler Windsor.

This is what I need:

Now would be a good time to consider converting away from the ball & trunion. If you want to convert to a slip-yolk type, you can purchase all the parts new. The rear yolk you can purchase new too, but it is cheaper used. The slip yolk parts can be found used from many '57-'65 Dodge trucks.

I know but the "narrative" that I am trying to follow is "If Mopar installed a torqueflite in a 56 Dodge D500 car late in the 56 model year run, they would have used a ball and trunion front U-joint/cross rear U-joint driveshaft".

At least that is the story that I made up as a guide for this project.

All that said, the rear U-joint is going to get changed to a more modern one without the "ears".

Thank you George. Picked it up yesterday (I was away between May 10 and June 3) and it looks like it will work. Ball and trunion flange is the necessary (for me) 4" and it fits onto the torqueflite tail piece/drum flange bolts just fine.

Strange that the diameter of the driveshaft is 3.5". Mine is 3.25"
