To my untrained eye, 1957 Chrysler 300C air cleaners look very close to 1957 Fury air cleaners. Can someone help me understand the differences and distinguish between the two?

They are identical. Same part number.

On my parts catalog (1957 canadian) for the cars with 2 air cleaners:
1821 398 for C75-300
1827 429 for Fury
1821 915 for Adventurer

It's curious because the US parts catalog (55-58) give the same part number for Fury and 300C. I doubt that canadian Fury had a special air cleaner !

There are definitely 2 different air cleaners out there. Actually, there are at least 3 or 4 different air cleaners out there, some have taller inlets and others have shorter inlets. I don't know why they changed them, but they did. From what I have seen, the Chrysler air cleaners have contours on the filter housing, whereas the Plymouth air cleaners have flat housings. This is a flat Plymouth housing.

And this is the contoured Chrysler housing. The contoured housing is the one used on the display 300C engine at the Chrysler museum too.

There are a total of three different 57 300C / 57 Fury air cleaner housings, as per Wayne Graefen. They all continued to have the same part number. Probably design improvements to resolve issues that arose after production started.

Is there any consensus on what the timeline was for the change in design? I’d be curious if all left the factory looking the same or the change happened in December 1956, this design was a service replacement, etc.

It's not like Canada used different air cleaners than the US did. The US catalog just failed to list the different part numbers. It is obvious that the US catalog is fraught with errors as it lists them as 1 part per car. Also '57 Fury without power package is dual quad, but '57 Fury with power package is single four? Doesn't make sense.

If I understand correctly, any of the styles referred to would be considered correct if the version a car rolled off the assembly line with is unknown?

There are obviously 2 different styles, not including the changes to the inlet length. The question is which one went where because they have no part numbers on them to figure it out. That question is reasonably obvious because Chrysler put the contoured lids on the single 4 bbl upper cars like New Yorkers & Saratogas. Whereas, the flat lids were given to Windsors. There was no reason to change the lid design between these cars as they all function & fit exactly the same. But Chrysler did this as a way of distinguishing between the upper level and lower level cars. So it seems obvious that they would have used the flat housings on the Plymouth and contoured housings on the Chryslers. Also many original cars back up this reasoning. The idea that just because there are errors in the US catalog, that it could have been random is foolish.
