Veteran Posts: 295 | Hi guys. I've got a request for a good, and hopefully affordable Idler Arm for the 57 Suburban. I felt some slack in the steering and finally got it on the hoist and had my buddy rock the wheel back and forth. When he owned it he put all new steering parts on it so he was really surprised when I showed him how much the idler arm was moving up and down when rocking the steering wheel or wheels. I found one available through Advance where I get a discount for 169 dollars and they said there was an additional collar or sleeve or bushing required. It looks like there's just a typical idler arm on there to me and I was actually surprised it was any different than many others used much later that looked so similar. Hell, that actually may even be a possibility. So if anyone knows of a more modern interchange and if not maybe a couple of decent sources, that would be awesome. All other parts are like new...just the idler arm is loose. Thank in advance, Wayne

Veteran Posts: 295 | Man! For years now I've been telling people how awesome you guys are. This is how all forums used to be. Now, most times nobody's even paying attention and you don't even get a response. That repair kit in 56d500's response looks to be the ticket. uncltank, is that the outfit that always had an add in the back of Summit or Jegs? Maybe both? If so I bought everything for my 66 Coronet from there. chlsr, what member? I'd be happy to patronize someone from this forum if I can. Thank you guys so much, that's less than a third of what Advance wanted. Wayne Edited by jaded13640 2019-07-28 6:54 PM

Veteran Posts: 295 | I'm going to put this question here but can move it necessary. My roomate's 62 Fury needs one too, I ordered it yesterday through Advance, factory direct, and it was nearly 80 bucks. Any assistance there would make him very happy. It's not that we can't pay for them, it's just stupid! LOL And especially if I can do some business with a fellow forum member...awesome. If I can find one for his fury I'll cancel the one from Advance before it ships and get his money back! THANKS AGAIN!!! A very grateful Wayne

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | For your friends '62 there are idler arms available on Rockauto for around $37 + shipping. Might save you a little money. Ebay is another good place to look. The conversion sold by 60Fury is a really nice bearing conversion. Much more heavy duty and solid than vintage style bearing conversions. Only downside is he is in Germany and may or may not have some in stock to sell. Just send him a PM. Edited by Powerflite 2019-07-28 7:15 PM

Veteran Posts: 295 | Excellent fellas. Yea...his might be available on Rock Auto. I just always get turned around when I'm trying to look up parts there. I'll have to give it a try. Wayne

Veteran Posts: 295 | Arizona, explain to me what the deal is with that bearing. I've been wrenching for 40 years and can't recall ever running across that. I assume it means that instead of a sleeve through the end that bolts to the car it has a bearing in there. But I don't have it apart yet so I can't swear by that. I was looking on rock auto and sure enough, there it was, one with the bearing and one standard. Thanks in advance, Wayne

Extreme Veteran Posts: 509 Location: Whetstone, Arizona | I have the kit someplace in my parts stash...like said, instead of the bushings on the ends the bolt has a sleeve in the center and a bearing at each end

Thanks for linking that kit but it's no longer on ebay. It shows up but won't let me buy it. The part I'm looking for is the 192731. The other one is the pitman arm. I side tracked my thread by getting into my buddy's 62. Rock auto doesn't list and idler arm. Any other idea would be awesome! PS. PST doesn't list one either. The best and only kits that is completely sealed from water, dust and dirt (with Polyurethane boots) and close tollerance HD radial bearings that needs no adjustment and can't be overtightened. These last forever with no play. There is a grease fitting but the way they are stressed it is actually not needed once you lubed it after installation. Expert 5K+ Posts: 7400 Location: northern germany | Someone who ordered a kit from me does not respond. So I have one kit left, as picured above. If someone is interested, 60 Euros plus shipping. Again, this is the best idler arm kit you can buy (cheaper than the rare parts/OE kits too), sealed with Polyboots and with close tolerance HD bearings (OE have unprotected radial bearings with sheet metal races/shells that require a lock plate and are almost impossible to adjust right). This one will last forever and reduces noticeable steering free play of the obsolete rubber bushings.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7400 Location: northern germany | For those with an OE ball bearing idler arm (or 60s aftermarket) here is a partial kit to service it (not mine) as the bearings are prone to wear and don't last very long: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-1957-1958-19591960-1961-1962-PLYMOUTH-D...
