Interesting.  Exner was already a minimalist with the 300 series trim.  This is buck-spankin" nekkid.

I love the 300Bs in particular.  This one is not to my liking.  Seeing this, I like Chrysler's choice to go with monotone.

Nice car! While wire wheels look grossly out of place on a 57+ Mopar, they look okay on these more european styled cars, imo.

Many years ago, Merle Wolfer owned a 300c with the custom treatment by
Derham. Same colors too. Roof had a thickly padded vinyl top, if memory
serves. It too, was kinda of odd looking.

BOTH the Derham 300B and the Derham 300C were purchased new by Thomas Barnes III, an "industrialist". They were built by Derham to his specifications. I can't find any history of this person or just what his profession involved.

BOTH cars were in attendance at the first Portland, OR meet of the "western" Chrysler 300 Club. That was, I'm guessing, around 1990 or 1991? Anyone remember? I was in attendance and took many photos of the pair but lost them all in a nasty computer crash about a decade ago now.

It appears that this car left the factory with a set of wire wheels. In discussions with the current owner they are not currently on the car. What is on the car currently are aftermarket 52 spoke examples and the original MotorRim would have been 48 spokes.

The correct VIN on this example is 3N562109 not 2107.

Welcome to the forum johnl2. Can you tell any perspective buyers any more details about the current condition of the car? I get the impression that you know this car.

Personally I'd have to see that top in person and see if it "works". I can imagine the look of a padded top and it just doesn't seem right. However I absolutely love the trimless version.

Thank you for the welcome and yes I do know about these cars as I'm the model year consultant for the Chrysler 300 Club International, Inc for both the 1955 C300 and 1956 300B. I've held these positions for the past 25 years. I've also owned one of each of these examples. Recently I was contacted by the current owner of the Derham car and I did consider buying it. I've known of this car for years and always found it interesting but just don't think it is the car for me. I'll follow the auction and see how it all plays out.

According to johnl2 this car have VIN 3N56*2109. It means that is a very late production car (1102 built overall 300 B’s – VIN 3N56*1001 had the first car and 3N56*2102 the last car). Other sources says that 2150 cars were built, including 48 cars equipped with 355 HP engine and 10.00 to 1 compression ratio. This car also equipped rare Torqueflite 3speed push button automatic transmission – new for 1956. There are 26 cars had Torqueflite transmission, and 30 (or 31) had manual transmission – it makes this car very rare… Otherwise used 2speed Powerflite… In addition this car built after May 15, 1956… my database have a picture of cowl tag of car that have VIN# 3N56*2031 – this car was built in that day… Would I want to look a cowl tag of this car…

I found this picture in my database also – it dated by 2006 year…

Igor: Something is wrong with the math.

From the older Hemmings write-up on this car:

"This is a rare car. It's one of sixteen of the last 56's and therefore got the 3speed Torqueflite instead of the 2speed Powerflite transmission."

If the first car started with 1001, the last car would be 2102… or 2150… but this example has 2109…
I'm completely confused… and it is LAST sixteen instead twenty six…

And what about this example? It has Torqueflite and schedule 412 – built on April 12, 1956

3N561991 is closer to the end of the model year (2150) than the beginning (1001). (But way more than 16 or 26)

I've been told by others here that there were lots of Torqueflite conversions done to Powerflite cars once the Torqueflite became available, so who knows?

Only by seeing the IBM car would you know whether the 300B left the factory with a Powerflite or Torqueflite.

3N562109, the Derham Car left the factory as a Powerflite according to the microfilm. Somewhere in it's life the trans was changed out. There were cars built back in the 1400 VIN range that had Torqueflites, but there is no consistency as to why certain cars got that trans. I've heard a story that the last 16 cars received the Torqueflite but based on the factory microfilm that is just not so. It also appears that this car was shipped with factory wire wheels but that is not what is on the car now per the owner. These are 52 spoke examples, per the current owner, on a 4.5 bolt pattern and thus aftermarket. Original wheels were 48 spokes. Regarding comments about numbers on how many 355HP cars there where I've never seen any documentation to support a count and for that matter which cars, but would suspect all of the race cars had such. Over the years I've had many calls for assistance and one of the first things out of the owner's mouth is "this is a 355HP car", but of course they can't support the statement as it is not reflected on the microfilm. In my world the microfilm is the Bible.

To elobrate further on cast Iron Trorquefliets there are differences between Letter Cars and all the others. I'm no expert in this area but current club member, Don Verity, rebuilds them and knows the ends and outs of these. The late George Reihl was also very knowledgeable and rebuilt them for years. Things I do know is a difference in clutch packs and possible valve bodies. So my point here is just because it has a Torqueflite doesn't mean it is a 300 spec unit.

I guess another key to identify a transmission is a cowl tag. The production of cars, equipped with Torqueflite was started since February 22, 1956. Here is an Imperial cowl tag, that built on June 14, 1956 (see SCHED 614) and Torqueflite equipped. The digit «6» above letter «S» says about it.
