thank you gentlemen , i haven't had an occasion to even think about a ballast resistor getting warm since @1967 when i changed the only one
i've ever had go bad on a 57 chevrolet when i was 17 ,,,,,,, a life time ago-------------------------------------------------later

Pardon me guys... you might be laughing but I yanked this part 40 years ago when I started the engine of my Belvie (it was stuck after 15 years ina field)... and I am still wondering what was it for.....

Theoretically, an ignition coil is constructed for a working tension of 7-9 volts, hence the ballast resistor, which is bypassed during the cranking of the starter for to ensure that the voltage drop doesn't affect the ignition sparks.

The risks to run a coil intended for ballast resitor without it is overheated coil and shorter life time of the breaker points.

There are of coarse ignition coils constructed for a working tension of 12 volts continiously, so maybe you have on of those?
