Good question!
Years ago I rented a specialized HD Snap on puller ——— ruined it!!
Just went and got another complete steering gear. Pulled that pitman arm no problem.

To remove the pitman arm with the steering gear in the car is a drama since there's no good space for a heavy duty puller.

For this reason, I will build a puller simular to the one shown in the fsm.

With the steering gear out of the car, it's important to have a heavy duty two arm puller with a crosswise reinforcement arm that holds the legs together.
I use a big wise for this instead.

Might have to heat the outside of the arm, then tap with hammer while pulling with a slide hammer/hook assembly.

As for tapping/hitting with a hammer - a photo of the broken ball-guide from the steering gear I recently renovated. Someone has beaten on both the ingoing and the outgoing shaft..……

Slidehammer wont work - the pitman arms are really tight and after years of rust creeping into the splines.

bought one two piece that was too small . tried a two legged puller , but went sideways while tightening . the next step will be buying a bigger two piece puller or a truck sized
puller like wiz posted . as to heating/bigger hammer theory , i tried that with the two legged puller as tight as i could get it without twisting the puller too far sideways . the
trick is here i think is to find a puller i can get super tight without slipping off , a little more heat without damage , and a bigger hammer . as of right now i've had it soaking
for two days with kroil adding just a little as it seeks to spread ,,,,, thanks guys and i'm still open to puller suggestions . i've never had one this tight --------------------------------later

I wish you luck.
I successfully pulled probably more than a dozen of them with just basic pullers but I pulled all of these in my shop with the steering gear out of the car. All/most of these off junkyard cars where they had been down in the dirt but the one I posted about earlier, I scrapped the entire assembly! But, that was in the days of "plenty"! It was off a Chrysler so the pitman arm is different from a Dodge and I didn't need another Chrysler arm!

hah stand behind a shield when using one of those.., get well protected... the pressure is insane, if that thing shattered it would be like a hand grenade going off.

Even the chinese stuff is correctly heat treated though it looks.

I just cut my old one off since i wasnt going to use it, it slid right off
