The questing is regarding an early 1955 Plymouth 259 V8. I think the block was actually made in 1954

I have two dip sticks. I bought a used one when I was having trouble with my oil non return valve not working because I thought something might be wrong with the dip stick. Now that I have solved that problem, I'm not sure I'm using the right dip stick.

I'm trying to attach a photograph. Both dipsticks are exactly the same total length and the cap is in the exact same location on both sticks.

Measuring from the tip of the stick, the add and full mark is 2 9/16 inches and 3.0 inches respectively and on the other the add and full mark is 3 inches and 3 7/16 inches respectively.

Does anyone know what is the right dip stick?

Thanks,

Sam

When I bought the used dip stick. I thought it came from a 259 V8, just like mine. It's been a long time since I worked on this and now I can't remember which dip stick was original to my car.

On a fresh oil change you can try each stick and see which one is closer to, or dead on, the full mark if push comes to shove.

I'll do the oil fill and see. I'm worried about running with too much oil but If you put in the required amount with an oil filter change and run the engine for a minute. You should be exactly on the mark if the stick is right.

Thanks...

Filled my car with 6 Quarts of oil after an overnight drain and filter change and it exactly lines up full on the dipstick that would take more oil to fill it. These two dipsticks are 1 quart different exactly. One is a 5 quart oil and filter change dipstick and one is a 6 quart oil and filter change dipstick. 1955 takes 6 quarts for an oil and filter change.

Just something to check out when you are working on your car.

I made a leather cap seal for the dipstick that really worked good. The old seals on these dipsticks were in pretty crummy shape. I'll make you one and mail to you if you want one. Free leather dip stick seals.

My 259 dipstick is probably original as the engine definitely is and there are no spares in Oz. The add mark is at 3 inches. Reads full after oil change too. So we are on the same page. I also made a new leather seal at great expense from an old work glove, saves you the cost of postage!

It's pretty easy to make the leather seals for the dip sticks and they work great. One of the few easy fixes I've had. Thanks for letting me know about your dip stick. I'm sure I have the right on in use now.
