do anyone know if the front fender spears on a matador and polara are identical except for the stud mounts. I have one from a matador but the holes in the polara fender dont line up although the holes in the polara base plate do. I hate to ddrill another hole in the fender if i dont have do. I have some restoration pictures from other projects and they look the same but are they???

Here is the page from the parts book. PD2 is the Polara.

I appreciate the page but i am not sure what i am looking at. Would you guess that Ornament Package , Top PD2-H #219613 is the polara but Base Package #2196414 and 2196415 is the matador? Not sure that makes any sense because the spears on both sides of the matador are the same. Why two numbers. And besides the Ornament Package doesnt list the individual parts and the Base Package is only the spear (I assume). And further, what is PD-1-L, PD-3 and PD-4- Dart and Matador?? They only made the three lines in 1960. I still dont know why the holes on the spear i have dont line up with the holes in the Polara fender. Do you know of anything illustrated, by any chance? Thanks, Pat

I've highlighted the pertinent areas. The Polara has a different number than the other Matador and Darts. The base plates for the Polara are left and right. When it says "package" it could be that it includes multiple parts or just includes the hardware. The base plate is the part that goes under the spear and up to the headlight trim.

PD1-L = Matador
PD2-H = Polara
PD3 = Dart (6-cylinder)
PD4 = Dart (8-cylinder)

Unfortunately the illustrations aren't much help, the only image showing the baseplate doesn't call it out. And don't take the fact that they list all the models on the page with one illustration that it means the parts are the same. The illustrations are just used to lead you to the parts listing where the actual part number is.

boy, that really makes no sense. the illustration doesnt even mention the base plate. and the number listed for the spear 12-15-21 on the illustration is used for the whole ornament package in the parts list. I guess they mean "the base package" is actually the base plate. I have both base plates and they look the same but amazingly are marked LH and RH but only one spear and one headlight cap. I bought this car completely disassembled and am having a really hard time putting it back together. What book do you have there with all those pictures and part numbers? I REALLY could use one. Plus it has been the victim of "sticky fingers" over the years as it sat in the back room of a museum. One side of something will be gone and part of an assembly will be missing. Firewall and under dashboard and the wiring harness is a special mystery. I really appreciate your help on this. Pat

The 12-15-21 is not a part number. It's just the reference number for the section of the parts book. The picture of the car is in section 23 but fender components are listed in section 12 of the book. I've dealt with these Chrysler parts books (and other makes) for decades so I'm really familiar with them.

There must be a slight difference in the baseplate that caused them to make left and right ones. and I don't really understand why they had to make different spears. They look the same but I've not had the two kinds in my hands to compare.

It's like when I was trying to figure out why the "Chrysler" emblem on the back of my '60 wagon is different from the non-wagons. When you look at them, they look exactly the same. I found out that they move the pin on the back of the "C" to clear a brace inside the tailgate on the wagon and that's the only difference. Why they didn't just use that on the non-wagons I'll never know.

The book that information and illustrations came from is the factory parts book. Here's a site where you can download a copy. http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=107

The 1960 Dodge fender ornament “spears” are out there, just depends on what you’re looking for / willing to pay

Here’s link to an NOS set that are on eBay now:

I guess that is why chrysler was always teetering on the edge of ruin. You said they had different spears but the only part number(I think) is 2196413. If there is two the difference has to b only in the stud mountings. Sort of like your emblem problem. . I will look that book up. Pat

i hhad two bought from oldwood along with the fenders several years ago. I paid him for all of it but by the time i got out to little rock , he had sold the spears to someone else. Funny how things can slip your memory. Never got my $70 back either.

holy little rock. now i am really pissed. dont need them that bad. but the listing did solve the mystery. 2196412 is for matador and 2196413 is for polara . The one i have here has 1863342 stamped in it which is the number mentioned in the ebay listing. Only thing i dont know is what is the difference. The length of the stud bolt is one possibility but also has to be a difference in stud centering to fit the holes in the polara fender. I promise never to buy any station wagons.

The 2196413 part number referenced is for the “complete” fender molding package but NOT the part number that’s on the spear “only”.
According to the info shown in the master parts catalog that molding package is for the PD2, Polara model which should include the additional finishplate that was mounted on top of fenders on the polara models.
Note that the master parts catalog also lists the quantity required per car for the 2196413 oranament package as 2 - meaning that the same parts are used on both the driver & passenger sides.

Also have to remember that over time many part numbers were superceded / changed over the years.

May want to go back and review this old thread as it has some info on the 1960 Dodge fender spear differences.

and look who is in the thread-ME. absolutely no recollection till i saw it. at the time was looking for a spear for the matador i had bought. But the pictures are the answer. The front stud is in a totally different place and would work in the polara fender. Send me a bill for your services. Thanks, Pat
