Expert 5K+ Posts: 8953 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | has any one had issues with buying a bigger lift can and the base circle being different than oem . my 69 383 has been back together for some time now . breakin went well but after the breakin i have a very distinct valve tapping issue which sounds like all rockers . i'm about scared to take it back down and find something i don't want to see . it starts real , real easy even after setting a week or two , no missing , runs like hell til higher rpm then misfires , pops back through the carb but settles down quickly with less throttle and heat range is really cool . it has a howard cam , comp cam lifters and after market 8.75in push rods . ive had 383's in the past but none that put me back in the seat like this one but the tappin is drivin me nuts -----------------------------later

Also you should pull the oil filter off, cut it open after draining it, lay out the inner element and look for metal. Check for broken valve springs. Are they oe springs or part of the kit, what is the gross lift.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 459 Location: Beaumont TX | I had an issue with my valve rockers tapping on one side of my 1955 259...All the rockers were tapping but the two in the back were tapping louder. Right at first after rebuild, the tappets in the front were pretty quiet. Quiet for about 400 miles I think. After 500 or so miles, I pulled the valve cover and found there was zero oil going to the rockers. The cam bearing was installed wrong.

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13067 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Perhaps not related, but I renovated a Pontiac 350 cui with a mild Howard cam and lifters. All was good, breakin in and for a while. Then suddenly the Engine lost all oiling to the rockers and push-rods. 8 pushrods were practically chrushed at the end towards the rockers. When I ran the oil pump with a drilling machine - not a drop of oil came through the lifters. Removing one lifter gave a huge shot of oil, so nothing wrong with the Circuit. I finally opened and cleaned all the lifters - found some residue that looked like grinding dust inside the lifters - after cleaning thhe lifters and remounting them, the oil flow came back immediately. Engine still runs good after more than a year. Howard cams naturally never even responded to my questions aboth this issue……...

Keep in mind that the proper height changed in 1966. Many cam sellers seem to be unaware of this change. If everything looks good, you may just need some adjustable push rods or rockers.
