I'm replacing my fuel pump and decided to look in the fuel pump hole and see how well the timing chain was oiling. It doesn't seem to have hardly any oil on it at all. I can wipe my finger on the timing chain and see a little oil but almost noting. The fuel pump arm had almost no oil when I wiped it and the eccentric was pretty dry too. The nut on the end of the cam doesn't look very oily either. There was some engine oil on the fuel pump return spring.

When I had my engine apart and ran the oil pump, a lot of oil came out of the front main bearing. I don't know if it splashes all the way to the timing chain or not. I am certain that I installed that little angled oil drip part that looks like it would drip oil on the timing chain directly but seems like that oil would come from up above somewhere.

Does anyone understand the timing chain oiling on these engines. I looked in the service manual at the oil diagrams and really see much that addresses the oiling of the timing chain.

I'm worried that i don't have enough oil on my timing chain and fuel pump eccentric now.

Based on the diagram below, I see a "trough" that looks like it is supposed to direct oil from the camshaft onto the top of the cranksprocket and thereby oil the timing chain. Not sure if there is enough splashing about to sufficiently oil the fuel pump eccentric and fuel pump lever arm.

Agree that the factory manual diagram (also below) is not very helpful on this issue.

Thanks Dave, That little trough is there and would oil the chain from the cam just like you said. A picture of mine is attached just to add to your posted diagrams. I'm just hoping oil is coming down from my cam like it is supposed to and supplying oil to that little trough. I'm going to run the engine today without the fuel pump on and try to see how much oil is moving around in there. Later last night I wondered if all of the oil just drained away. There is nothing but vertical surfaces there and hot oil may just all drain off. Thanks for your help.

Sam

I ran the engine with the fuel pump out and there was plenty of oil in the timing chain area. Not sure how it gets in there but it was really oily. The car had set for a couple of days and I guess all of the oil drained out and made it look pretty dry. But it is oily when it gets running.

Geez. I missed that trough before and now I see it everywhere:
