Expert Posts: 3156 Location: NY & VT | I like seeing what's out there, older vehicles are so much more rust-free than the corroded and sagging junk we have here. For example for years there was a '53 Cadillac DeVille sitting in a gas station lot off Federal Blvd in Sunnyside that had really faded paint but still looked incredibly rust-free. It had finally disappeared when we were last out a year ago. Solid old pickups are all over the place. I still fantasize about finding the '57 Dodge 4 dr hardtop or '60s'70s Dodge pickup of my dreams on one of our trips out, and we may be out for an extended (maybe 2 week) visit nest Spring! Might even look at some real estate. Keep 'em coming!

Location: The Centennial State | Hi, Roger: I keep my eyes on the craigslist stuff (seems to be slim pickins lately), but I've never been on the facebook or whatever MP is. I set up a "street finds" thread, but I haven't seen many posts there. I certainly remember as a teenager in the 1980's there were a bunch of great cars sitting out in the open or even seen driving the streets. There were still a bunch of ForwardLooks around. Now they are very rare to see!

Expert Posts: 3156 Location: NY & VT | Oh man I'm diggin' that '58 - 4 dr hardtops are my weakness! While a '57 Dodge in that body style is my #1 fave that Plym Sport sedan really rings my chimes! Wonder what they want for it? On another note Mike, it looks like my daughter may have just sold her place on Clay St in Sunnyside and is buying a new (as in brand new) house on Urban St in Applewood (W of Denver). And at 43 she's pregnant for the 1st time! So we plan to be out in April for a couple of weeks!

Location: The Centennial State | Congratulations Roger! That's great news! Be sure to look me up when you come out. I sent a reply to the craigslist ad for that Plymouth, but did not receive a reply. Not sure what the deal is, but I liked it too.

Expert Posts: 3156 Location: NY & VT | I love the originality of that '57 Belvy! Growing up in Baltimore in the '50s, a girl neighbor's Dad had a white/gold '57 Fury, I've preferred the '57s ever since. That Belvy sedan would make a great driver.

Location: The Centennial State | That does look like a great car! Seems like a pretty honest description based on the images. There is something about a "no-frills" ForwardLooker that has a lot of appeal. This one is a top-end Belvedere, granted, but not a whole lot of options.
This being the Rocky Mountain Region, I try to post a few of the ForwardLook trucks too!

Location: The Centennial State | Seeing no takers, I am going to start the discussion on that Power Wagon. Very, very cool ForwardLook truck! Despite the nearly fifty-large price, I was intrigued. Then I got to the images of the interior. At that price, I am expecting the interior to go one of two ways: 1) bone stock original or 2) resto-mod super lux (think leather and all the techno gadgets). The images provided were a total disappointment!

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10196 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Tacky interior to say the least. Engine: First he says "Original 315 Poly V8 4-speed vehicle." Umm....No. That is an LA block of indeterminate displacement (318? 360?) Then he says: "A 360ci truck engine replaced the tired 315 in the late 70's" Edited by 56D500boy 2021-01-07 9:31 PM

Expert Posts: 3156 Location: NY & VT | Hadn't been checking here recently much due to lack of action... that '57 'flight coupe is sort of solid, but it needs literally everything. You'd have to have true love to even think about restoring it when you can find a well restored or original for 25-30k if you're patient and look carefully. It's the old sad story: these days there's no way could you restore this car for even near that. The days of good paint jobs for 3-5k are gone and the cost of the kind of bodywork it will need is insane. This is another case where it makes much more sense to buy a good one to start with unless you own a body & paint business, or can do, and like to do, that kind of work yourself to an acceptably high standard. Otherwise a smart car guy would pass. Edited by firedome 2021-01-09 11:01 AM

Location: The Centennial State | Yes! I'm always intrigued by prices. Sometimes it seems like prices for the marquee ForwardLook cars are falling: Richard Carpenter's 300C convertible failed to sell at auction and the maximum bid was less than $90,000. At the same time, there was a 58 Dodge for sale recently in Denver that I was amazed sold (and sold quickly) with an asking price of $42,000. There's probably no rhyme or reason. However, if prices are rising to get into the game, as with that 57 Fireflite, and prices are waning for the restored cars, that - as you noted - makes the restoration game a real loser.

Expert Posts: 3156 Location: NY & VT | It's my guess that prices are dropping overall; some experts at Haggerty who track values have stated that '50s and even many '60s cars have been declining. Us oldsters that like them are starting to get rid of stuff, me included. The wild card is the pandemic. I have a feeling that over time it's going to affect prices for the worse in the short and long term. Priorities are going to be adjusted. Still, I'm never going to be able to buy a '57 300C vert totally rust free project car like I did for $4k back in 1985.

Location: The Centennial State | Agree! I have purchased many a $500 car in the 80s and 90s, that would have been shunned at $500. Times change.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5060 | nah one 300C isnt the gauge, there is alway 4-5 for sale it seems. They are cool but not the prettiest cars. i probably consider it the ugliest of the 57-58-59 cars... but people took care of them. I know it was a kind of a fluke but a 2dr ht 58 Imperial just sold for 88k.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5060 | the 60, 57-58, 59, 55-56.. imperials, in that order, so yes. The 300C-D-E are giant gaping maw cars... i dont know any article who called it an attractive car... I like the new yorker better, Desotos etc. I wont even go into the horrible aerodynamics of the thing... I think of the FWL 300's the 60 is the best..

Expert Posts: 1290 | mike2nd -- Actually, that "gaping maw" is very aggressive and completely suited to a vehicle not intended to be a matron's grocery-getter or an elderly doctor's daily driver. In addition, it was recognized by most of the automotive writers of the day as being one of the few grilles that actually facilitated the flow of cool air directly to all of the radiator (the smaller grille-like vents below the headlights directed fresh air to the front brakes). The only real aerodynamic issues to be addressed are the "visor" over the windshield and the hooded headlights, which were flaws for all the rest of the '57 Chryslers (as well as the DeSotos) while the fins, common to all FLK cars, did really reduce steering corrections in crosswinds. It also had less frontal area than the rest of the "big" Chryslers as its roofline was the lowest of them all. You might find it of interest that while the C was able to average just 134.108 on the sands at Daytona compared to the B's 139.373, the simple addition of ordinary modeling clay to windshield and headlights enabled the car to do 147.7 on the Chrysler test track. I would suggest that you extend your reading material material beyond Marvel comic books and look at such things as: - Uncle Tom McCahill, the dean of the 1950-1960s automotive writers and the guy who made 0-60 acceleration a standard for gauging performance, in the May 1957 "Mechanix Illustrated," coined the term "The Beautiful Brute" for the C and said it was ". . .the most hairy-chested, fire-breathing land bomb ever conceived in Detroit." - The March 1957 edition of "Motor Trend"said: "Externally, the 300-C again has much to offer in cleanliness of line with very little non-functional embellishment. The grille is distinctive—showing a relationship to recent Chrysler dream cars—and the hood is peaked." It was also "Car of the Year." - The Industrial Design Institute gave the C its award for "Excellence in Industrial Design." - "Car Collector & Car Classics" (July 1990) said the C is a "blend of beauty and brawn in an era not known for styling refinement" and its "deft styling has ALWAYS made the 300C a favorite among car enthusiasts" especially as it "backed up its RUGGED good looks with plenty of muscle." Both of the caps are mine. - "Greatest American Cars" makes the best point in that the C has "elegant lines and a masculine grille." I think the word "masculine" is operative as it was intended to be a man's car back in the day when it was perfectly acceptable to be a man. - "Hemmings Muscle Machines" says it stood apart from the rest of the line's "stodgy styling." The '57 300C is such a classic that Chrysler wanted to play on its reputation when it introduced that 4-dr SEE-dan in 2004. That aggressive "gaping maw" sure looks a darned sight better than the bored yawn of Mercedes -- it intimates that it's ready to gobble up any slow moving vehicle in its way. Expert Posts: 3156 Location: NY & VT | I agree with Joe, there's a reason 300s were desired right from the get-go and were collectible waaay before any other FL car. They also bring more $$$ than any other FL car, with maybe a super rare FI Adv. conv like Tom White's ex-car or similar ultra-rarity being the exception. That gaping "maw" is perfect for a car that could beat a '57 Corvette, and just look around at how many new cars imitate it today, starting with Audi about imitating it 10 years ago. The lack of chrome on 300s made it classy in an age of chromey gorp, and it still looks timeless today. One I should have kept along with my Jag E-Type. Sigh.
