Hi everyone, I am trying to see if someone knows if the early Cast Iron A488 Torqueflites use the same oil filler tube and dipstick as later model trans like 727's etc etc? (We can always calibrate dipstick if that is different - just need the hardware).

I am in UK and have a crazy French car (59 Facel Vega HK500) which uses a "B" Block 383 with an early cast iron TF. As you can imagine those things (or any other pre 60 Mopar) aren't thick on ground here and most Mopar folks here know after 65 and up.

Not the easiest part to have shipped across Atlantic either!

Hope someone knows or can point us where something very similar might be found

cheers

Hi , what a cool car that is ! Congrats on rebuilding it...
As far as I know, they are different bent, not sure about the lengh though...
I have a 1959 Dodge CRL D500, whith A488...if I can help ? You could mesure your existing dipstick length and I can see what is the length on mine.
I also looked out for a replacement as my tube was dented and had a small crack. I was unable to find one so I welded the crack and used some underwater weld composit to seal it all off. It holds so far, was driving 3k miles since may, not a single drop.

I believe the tube on the older 488 attaches with a large nut on the end of the tube > to the trans ...... the 727 tube just pushes into the trans . diff lengths and curves .

Correct (except the name of the trans is A-466 not A-488)

Thanks guys, I just want to confirm then that my trans is a A466 not an A488?

I was told (by, of course, the guy who found it and rebuilt it!) that it was a A488!
But it clearly looks same as the A466 in the Don verity1736 photo above (top photo)

I have no tube or dipstick at all so just want to make sure if I talk to people (ie like Don) about getting a spare part I need to know the correct Trans.
Daniel 1959 is your trans the same as the Don Verity photo? If so, could you measure the length of the tube and the length of the dipstick as it may be a lot easier fabricating a filler tube and recalibrating an existing trans dipstick?

I was hoping someone might be able to point me to later cars which share the same length / tube shape (even if the end fitment is different).

Thanks anyway for such a helpful resource!
cheers

You need a tube, nut and dipstick for a Cast Iron transmission, correct?

Believe this is from a 60 Chrysler
Parts books will tell you if it is the same as what you need.
Compare part numbers

If anyone else needs any parts from this tranny, speak up because it's going outside on the scrap pile soon.

I'm willing to agree that all of the official Chrysler documentation will say "A-466," but there has to be a reason that "A-488" is so widely used.

Below is a 1959 service bulletin that shows clearly that for 1959, the iron Torqueflite was significantly revised and major parts, including the valve body, could not be adapted to earlier TFs. There were also other significant differences for 1959, including the wheel-type push button adjustment. Here is an MTSC film for the 1959 changes. They are significant! https://youtu.be/hOrl73eNmOo?t=179

In my opinion, there were enough differences for the '59+ iron TFs to be given a unique identification, but I've never seen that documented. So my question is, did the '59+ iron TF ever get referred internally at Chrysler as A-488?

Maybe not. Below is a 1961 service bulletin showing that A-466 was used at least until 1961. It doesn't mention A-488 anywhere.

Thanks for everyone's help. I found a guy with a 59 De Soto in UK who is swapping out the trans and now have a tube and dipstick for mine.
Am I correct that the capacity of fluid to fill mark is 21 lpnts?

once installed if any different may need to ask someone to measure the length to full mark but at the moment I'm all set!

cheers

I have a '56 Imperial with the first torque flite 3spd and a 354 hemi. The dipstick tube comes way up beside the valve cover and it is almost a straight shot pulling or pushing the dip stick.

The Ram Induction cars use a different diptsick tube that comes up higher and the stick is actually made from two dipsticks riveted together in the middle.
