I am going to be doing a thread about all the D500 engines, from 1956 to 1961 and will need photos interspersed with the text. I have previously posted photos of the 1956-57 D500, D500-1, Super D500 and D501 engines so I just need to add some 58-61 photos. If I miss some or you have better photos, particularly ones with genuine (not fake) D500 valve cover decals, please post them up here.

Previous 56-57 D500 engine photo thread: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=70160&...

I am using the Weertmann book as an info source but I think that he has some minor errors in some cases, e.g. a D500 with a 2 bbl carb (?)

Now the 58 to 61 D500 engines (if I have any of these wrong, or I am missing something, please correct me and/or post a better photo (Thanks) ):

The '58 single 4bbl has the wrong air cleaner. This engine has the correct big block, one year only air cleaner for 1958. The all-silver color of the engine is correct for this year. This picture has the correct power steering pump for the '58 big block as well, though I don't know if there were variations based on build factory etc. Also, notice that the dual quad '58 D500 has the wrong valve covers. '58 valve covers are also one year only and don't have the slant cut on them. They are more rectangular than all the other valve covers.

Thanks Nathan.

Please (everybody) post other correct D500 engine photos if what I found on the internet is incorrect.

Thank you Andrew. I was overlooking the "Dart D500" but I see it now in the 1961 Dodge brochure, buried under the Polara V8 listing. Any ideas about the hp and torque of the Dart D500?

The 59 Dodge D500 was a single 4bbl carb, while the Super D500 was dual quads. In the photo, the power steering pump is a later model. 59 Dodge had the 'slipper' variety.

??? I am showing both the single carb 59 D500 and the Super D500 dual (tandem) carb quads above. If you have better photos of the 59 D500 or Super D500 with the proper PS pump, please add them here and I will use them when I do the full 56-61 D500 engine post.

Thanks Daniel. I didn't recognize 56D500boy's 59 single 4bbl pics since one had a non-original PCV setup. Also, no D500 decal and incorrect hood spring colors. I see you did a small amount of customization, painting the inner fenders white instead of black.

56D500boy: I see where the name of the jpg is listed below the photo. But it would've been clearer if the different years were separated into different posts.

Thanks Daniel for the photos of your 59 Dodge D500 engine. I will use them but I will have to say something about the non-factory Zündkerzenkabelen

Ron: Please be patient. This thread is just a way for me to get photos of 56-61 D500 engines posted up so later (maybe today), I can link the photos into the middle of text that talks about the engines. I will clearly identify, in words, what the photos represent. It's a "hack" around the way this forum works with photos (all stacked up at the end doesn't work for me).

You can put text right on the photos. Photoshop or photo editing program of your choice.

Sorry about the sparkplug wires....

but i like the reliability and performance of the new wires. I almost use my car as a daily driver. I drive it 2 days a week. Only when it rains it stays in the garage. I am not a purist and so originality on some parts does not count that much for me.

Found some more photos that I might want to use in the eventual D500 engine thread. I know that 56 and 57 double rocker 315/325 engine valve covers were red (with black wire covers) and *NO* absolutely NO! decals of any kind (especially not SUPER RED RAM or the later D500 decals). HOWEVER, I don't know if the 58 B block 361 D500s always had silver valve covers (or not) *OR* if the 1958s used the D500 valve cover decal. I am pretty convinced that the 59 D500s mostly had red valve covers *AND* the D500 decal, but I could be wrong. One of the photos below shows a 59 Super D500 with silver valve covers (and the D500 decal).

I am counting on you guys to set me on the correct path.

Here are the "new" ones I found today (NOTE: The name of the photo is listed under that photo):

59 Dodge D500: Red valve covers. 59 was the only year that used the D500 decal. Note: Most 59 Super D500s out there are not factory original. Note incorrect location for the coil. Also right exhaust manifold doesn't have the 'nipple' for the heat tube. Also, power steering pump is not correct. Should be slipper type.
