Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | I purchased this car from Pennsylvania back in November, but I just received it today due to issues with covid. The data tag shows the paint as being KTK, which is Champagne Gold with Charcoal Gray roof & sweep. But I'm not sure how a Crocus Yellow tag would have been encoded, so it might actually be that instead, but I doubt it because this looks to have a similar dirty yellow color that my "gold" '58 Firedome has. But this color doesn't match the paint chip at all. Not sure why someone decided to paint the roof a rust orange color on top of the original charcoal, and I'm not sure why it's sitting so high in the front. I had to check to be sure the motor was still in there! A really nice thing about this car is that all the doors, window cranks, trunk lid, & hood latch & open really well and all the glass is in good shape. No work required on them. It also has it's keys and someone installed a mirror-matic into it as well, so that's a bonus. My immediate plans for it is to fill the cylinders with trans fluid to see if I can get it to rotate eventually, replace the missing hood spring, and then let it wait until I can fix the rust issues on the floors. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | The car has very little rust issues on the outside of it, but more of it in very odd places. At first, I thought it had to have rusted from the underside, but the more I look at it, it seems to have rusted from the inside. The underside of the car is definitely cleaner than the inside. My only guess is the car may have been filled with a lot of dirt or junk that collected the moisture in these areas. There are rust issues on the tunnel & wheel tub, which are generally unheard of. And yet, the typical rust areas at the floors & trunk are actually in pretty good shape. Kinda weird. That wheel tub repair is gonna be a fun one. There are also rust sections high on the back floor as well. Since these are odd places for these cars to rust, it should be pretty easy to obtain repair panels from parts cars. You can see from the rear seat picture that the inside was originally painted a battleship blue-ish gray color, but the inside of the trunk lid was painted body color. I'm gonna need to replace those springs in the rear seat. Many are missing and many others are shot. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | The motor looks to be mostly complete, and mostly original too. The spark plug instructions are still on the valve covers. The aftermarket A/C compressor has some very creative brackets made to support it. I probably won't keep that system, but I won't mess with it until I get closer to being able to work on it. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | It looks like the car was originally from Pennsylvania. The car was last registered in 1973 (based on the safety sticker) and the dealer emblem is from Gehman in Emmaus, PA. The trunk lid isn't bad on the inside, but the outside would likely take more work than it's worth to fix it, so probably best to replace it. I saw the car on facebook too, i thought about buying it - but exporting a car that is unfit to drive is almost impossible. And when you ship it anyway, the shippment guys always break the cars with their forklifts. Anyway. I am glad that the car is in good hands

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | Thanks, everyone. Danny, I'm sure I won't be giving John a run of any kind as this addition will require me to purchase even more stuff from him. It's probably a good thing that I purchased this one last, because I probably wouldn't have purchased the parade green one and put all the work into it if I already owned this one. Even though the rust issues are pretty severe in places on this car, I am confident that I can fix it relatively quickly once I get started on it because I can fix most of the floor issues with 2 large patches from the 300D floor that I parted out.

Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | I saw this car on FB or CL last fall and considered it, we're 5 mi from the PA border and it was located only about an hour from me, but at my age I'm done with dealing with extensive NorthEastern rust. However in the present hands it has potential and will be a great car when done. Have fun!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | Thanks, I do enjoy working on them most of the time, that's likely why I do it. Prognosis on the motor is that it doesn't have a chance of running without a full rebuild so I put the air cleaner & spark plug covers back onto it to begin its storage until I pull the motor out of it. It's sad to say, but likely true, that that's the only reason this motor is still here and not pulled out for some other project. I'll spend some time to clean the threads on the front seat and bolt it down as well so that it's easier to tow. Cleaning the windows on it is on-going and awaiting new polishing products to arrive. But that's all I'll do to it until I am ready to tear into it for real. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9904 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Nathan: Sorry to hear that you will have to rebuild the engine. No way to save it from that? Did you happen to take any more photos of the spark plug instructions under the wire covers (before you put the covers back on) ?. I have never heard/seen of these instructions before and would love to see what the factory said. The instructions barely show here: Edited by 56D500boy 2021-03-19 4:00 PM

Veteran Posts: 142 Location: Victoria, Vancouver Island, BC Canada | Hi Nathan, have you put any water/coolant into this engine?.....I can see some expansion cracks on your water rail/thermostat housing in the pic with the Gold AC Brackets, sure hope that there's nothing like this on the block.......lovely NYR...... http://forwardlook.net/forums/forums/get-attachment.asp?action=view...

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | The cracks you see are just in the dirt/grease, not in the metal. I scraped it off and didn't see any issue underneath. I'm not concerned enough to look over the block right now. If it has some cracks in the outer jacket, I can braze or weld them up, so I'm not too worried about it. I just need to make sure I check it over before I get too far with the re-assembly.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | Thanks, I really like the combination too. I am surprised that the charcoal color is so dark though. I may lighten it up a little from what I currently see on there. If a car were given a copper glow or crocus yellow paint, how would it have been coded on the tag? They didn't use a letter for those two colors to my knowledge. I ask because my '57 Windsor is coded as NLN, copper brown roof & sweep with desert beige body. But the color is far too light to be copper brown. It definitely looks to be the copper glow instead. But how would it have been coded if that were true? Since the actual paint on this New Yorker is more in-between gold & yellow, it makes me wonder here too. Could it be that those two colors were used at the beginning or end of the model year, and then were replaced by the other colors with the same code? Edited by Powerflite 2021-03-22 2:14 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | The car came with an original owner's manual. There was also a receipt for some tire work at Binghamton, NY Goodyear store from 1966. The manual has a little damage on the bottom of it so I have to do some editing to make it better. I like this little book more than I thought I would. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | Got my official Chrysler Dealer Service Certificate from the book all filled out. I obtained the delivery date from the Pennsylvania title as the first date of registration. Pretty cool that they would keep it on there. That means that it never left the state. That's about 2 months from the scheduled build date. The person on the title lives in Emmaus, PA. That leads me to believe that he is either a son/relative of the original owner or near neighbor. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | Bill, that's an aftermarket A/C evaporator box made by Kool King, and is the Icelander model. If you have an aftermarket A/C system, you will need an aftermarket evaporator somewhere. The new systems hide a large box behind the dash (which may or may not fit here), whereas old systems like this one mount a small evaporator under the dash. If you have a factory A/C car, the evaporator is included as a part of the inner heater-A/C housing. A factory A/C car would have code 344, which this car doesn't have.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | I noticed this car has the short air cleaner without the clearance dent on the tank. That made me curious what the motor number would be. It is NE5710613 which is 1241 away from the VIN number. Nevertheless, this is very likely the original motor to the car. The car hasn't changed hands very much over they years and everything looks very original, except for the A/C system that was installed into it. So this motor number marks the position for a scheduled January 30th build date. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | This is definitely the most original New Yorker that I own. It even has at least 3 of its original wheels, and this is one of them. It's 14 x 6.5" wide without the dog dish nubs and is painted all-black. All three wheels are the same as this one. So this is what a 1730809 wheel looks like. The tire on this one is what broke the lever tube on my tire changer. After finally breaking the bead on it, I couldn't remove the tire from the rim and had to pay a shop to get it done. It turns out that it had a thick liner inside the tire to give it better puncture resistance, that fit snug to the rim, and also had an inner tube inside that. It made the wheel a lot heavier than you would otherwise expect it to be.
