Location: St. Louis | So, I bought this 57 Belvedere and the man said he thought the starter was going out, because the engine was spinning slowly. I swapped batteries, new solenoid, bypassed solenoid, ran jumper cable from battery ground directly to starter housing. Put a jump box to the starter, tried jumping with another vehicle. Installed a new battery. Turned over engine with breaker and it feels normal. After all of this troubleshooting with no different in rotation speed I took it to "Starter and Alternator Tech" in Madison Ill for a refurbish. When they had it finished the next day I asked what was wrong with it. Said "It was really dry in there." I took the MDM-6001 home, installed and there was no difference. Brought it back and they said "the car didn't start" I said correct it won't spin fast enough. Told me I had to drop it out to reset it every time I tried and it didn't start. Also said there cannot be anything wrong that would effect the torque output. I don't believe that. That would mean if you flooded the car, points closed, etc that you would have to drop the starter out every time. I had a Cummins where the starter lost torque. Car is getting spark, even converted to electronic ignition during the troubleshoot. Car also has fuel, and even used starting fluid. Timing was checked by light and also by manual TDC. I took it to autozone to test and it passed, but they used a Ford test on it. Took it to Advance and they also didn't really know how to test it. Here is a link the video from Advance Auto Parts test. Does is seem right? The sound on the test when it stops seems like it is binding? Also like it isn't spinning fast enough? I am wondering if I should ship it out to a shop, if you guys recommend one? Do they make a high torque starter for the 301 poly/TF? Any other starters work for this application? Location: So. Cal | There might be resistance in the internal connections at some point causing lower voltage at the starter. But if it turns the same speed with a running jump at 14 volts, it probably isn't the problem so it might be a waste of time to tear it apart. There are newer starters you can use from IMI performance, but don't overcrank them or they will overheat. Give them a call to order it or get the correct part number from them. Here is the interchange on your starter if you would like to try another one. It uses the same starter as my truck and '58 Dodge. I don't have that problem so you might have better luck with a different one.

From what I see in your video, the Bendix isn't working. I should throw the starter gear outwards when energized and then retract back when the power is removed. Your's just spins, it never moves out or retracts.

Location: St. Louis | I noticed that, and they acted like that is how it was supposed to be back then. Said that when the engine starts it would reset it. They told me a lot of things I didn't believe, lol. I will order one up if I continue to work with that one |

old , new or rebuilt and i do know for sure some 6 cylinder starters were used by the factory for 8 cylinder applications simply

Location: Alaska | The guy that tested the starter is correct. Some "bendix' do not retract until the engine starts and the flywheel resets it. |
