This "pop-up" car show has being going for a while now (some in 2020 and since spring this year). Regular Wednesday late afternoon/early evening thing at a Wendy's/Tim Hortons on United Boulevard in Coquitlam (a Vancouver suburb).

Mostly Chevies and Fords but some Mopars, e.g. Road Runners/GTX/Satellites. My car has been the only Forward Look car every time that I've been. Last night was the exception. A 1959 300E that I have never seen in person.

Owned by a local media person who writes a regular column in the Friday Vancouver Sun newspaper, Alyn Edwards. Alyn has a collection of cars (and also cars that he finds, restores and sells). This 300E is one of his collection cars.

I think that he might have overstated the success of the 300s in the final photo. (???)

Letter cars were definitely performance cars, but they were never "muscle cars", because there is a very specific definition of what a muscle car is. A muscle car is defined as a cheap intermediate bodied car that the average Joe could afford, with large, high performance motors put into them, and very few other options to keep them affordable to the masses. Letter cars never fell into this category and neither do high cost sports cars. Many will argue that it doesn't necessarily have to be an intermediate body so you can include "pony" cars like the A-body Cuda, Mustang, & early Nova, and these days, that's a viable argument. But that's not how they were originally defined.

So which '50's Mopar actually does qualify as a muscle car, if any? Only the D500 followed the true muscle car recipe. Anyone could purchase a cheap 2dr Coronet sedan with no options except the D500 option. A true muscle car. None of the other Mopar brands allowed this like Dodge did until the '60's rolled around. Letter cars are definitely not muscle cars and anyone that says this is very ignorant of what it means!

Can't disagree with the D500 as Mopar's first "muscle" car but I was really taking issue with the suggestion that a) letter cars "won Nascar" five years in a row and b) that was with automatics. TOTAL BS.

Team Kiekhaefer's Chrysler 300s won in 1955 and 1956. Then he dropped out (we all know the story). And those cars had manual transmissions.

Either Alyn is ill-informed or he likes to stretch the truth. (??!!)
