Sorry, Phil I want to reply to your newly posted info but I thought that it would be best in a separate Member's Rides thread. You should post any new info (and photos) here.

Previously you (Phil) said:

Regarding the VIN, I posted this:

56D500boy - 2021-10-28 9:05 AM
That VIN indicates that your car is a *very* late build 1955 Dodge from the Detroit factory (see below).
If you can post a photo of your car's cowl data tag (like the example below), we can probably tell you more about the car as it left the factory.
In 1955, all the Dodge V8s were 270s, either the Super Red Ram "hemi" (very wide rectangular valve covers with spark plug wire covers) or the scallop-edged valve cover poly.

NOW...back to business: Interpreting your Cowl Data Tag (slightly enhanced version of the image you tried to post below):

Schedule 08 09 = Scheduled build date was August 9th, 1955, pretty late in the model year. The first 1956s were probably built in September 1955.

23 004 is a build sequence number, no real info available to us.

Body 218 = 1955 Dodge Coronet Sierra V8 wagon, 4 door, 6 passenger (228 was the Royal V8 4dr wagon and 217 was the Coronet 2 dr V8 wagon)

REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74414&...

Paint 70 = two tone, Cameo Red Upper and Sapphire white lower, like this 1955 Dodge Custom Royal Sedan:

REFERENCES: 1. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=42113&...
2. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=76595

Trim = 726 = a Red and White vinyl ("Cordagrain") for Coronet Wagons:

REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=70980&...

Check your engine Number (on the block, near the oil filler tube). Should be D551-nnnnn

Hi thanks for the info and putting it in the right place. I will post photos on this thread soon
Just a bit of info on me getting the Dodge coronet Sierra station wagon and its condition
The car was advertised on uk eBay for £6000 and had just been posted so a friend of mine and myself bought the Dodge to sell on we paid £5000 pounds it seemed a solid vehicle but on getting it home we realised it had had over £10,000 pounds spent on it ,full engine rebuild ,gearbox overhaul,new clutch ,complete rewire,body off for chassis work , new floors tig welded in ,inner and outer sills ,new carb,disc brakes all round new purpose made alloy fuel tank ,and more. After looking at the dodge and walking past it numerous times I realised I was becoming attached to it and loved it’s stance and look ,so I said to my friend I would like to keep the Dodge for myself my friend agreed,at this time the car was driving terribly virtually undrivable so we fitted four new shock absorbers better but not driving ,got the tracking realigned which was a mile out front passenger side was towed in a mile ,the Dodge now drives well
The forward plan up to now is
Electronic ignition to fit
Install rear airbags and new front springs, complete new interior inc headliner and door cards which are all missing thankfully the bows are there for the headliner.,the dash is complete and unmolested thankfully with radio
Externally I have not decided what to do the paint is a poor colour and in poor condition ,I need a windshield at some point current one bad crack in it (any help sourcing one appreciated not forgetting I’m in the uk thanks) the wheels will also be changed ,the body is in great condition other than a little bit on the doors about 6 inches from the bottom so cut out and reweld new plate in and that’s as far as I’ve got with work and thoughts so far can I just say thank you very much for all the help I have received so far from this forum
Thanks Phil

In addition to the paint code 70 on the cowl tag, I see «1» below «SP» i. e. paint 570-1 means two tone combination;
For example «IF»: PAINT 70 and «3» below «SP» i. e. paint 570-3 means three tone combination – Jewell Black Upper – Sapphire White Saddle – Cameo Red Lower

SP1 = Two Tone Combo;
SP2 = Tri Tone Combo with White Roof;
SP3 = Tri Tone Combo with Black Roof;
SP4 = Tri Tone Combo with Red (or Rose) Roof;

And finally:

A1 = Coronet Accessory Group: Air Foam Rear Seat Cushion, Wheel Covers, Rear Quarter Stone Shields and Cigar Lighter
SC1 = Windshield Upper Molding (SC = Sun Cap Visor abbreviation)

Thanks for posting the background story on your 55 Wagon Phil. Can't wait to see photos to confirm what we were thinking about paint and trim, etc.

In the meantime, you sent me this message and a new version of your wagon's cowl data tag (see below).

Igor, check this new image to see if your interpretation of the previous version of the tag changes. I see SP 6 and maybe SP 61 (??)

"Hi thanks Dave for opening my ride. That's great. I will post more photos when I can get resized. I have done the best i can with cowl tag. It's very thin in places.
The last number on the right is a 6 not an 8. Thanks, Phil"

I've suggested to Phil that he try the UK equivalent of Evapo-Rust or Rust Check brand "Rust Wash" to eat away the rust on his cowl data tag and further reveal the numbers on it.

(I also said that 55 Dodges never got cowl data tags until about mid-May 1955 so his Aug 9th, 1955 car definitely qualified.)

Igor. Yes. I just got this new image from Phil this AM.

What do you see under "SP" now? 6 or 61?

And yes, the trim code is 726, the two-tone Red/White Cordagrain vinyl for the wagons.

Dave, some corrections to your body code interpretation on the picture you posted above:

D56-1 – L6 Engine

117 = Suburban 2door Station Wagon, 6P
118 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 6P
119 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 9P

D55-1 – V8 Engine

217 = Suburban 2door Station Wagon, 6P
218 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 6P
219 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 9P

Re - paint unfortunately the car has been painted a sort of battleship grey but someone has tried to give it that patina look rather unsuccessfully so it is possible to see the original red and cream / off white colours so you are dead right with your paint interpretation ,re - interior not in a good state but may be something original left for me to identify ,the dashboard is black and cream all looks to be original I will post a some photos
Thanks Phil

Found an article about the 1955 Wagons that featured on with what I think is the same "70" paint code. Not sure whether the interior is correct or not. The photo of the dash is from a similar Royal Sierra wagon so it might be different than Phils. The engine bay photo is from yet another car but it is a 270 poly and should be similar to Phil's:

Dave, maybe is it code SP6 = 296? The optional paint for sedans and wagons? Like in the Mike Petersen’s book…

I am thinking that SP 6 = one of the special paint codes that takes a two tone 1955 paint scheme into a three tone.

From pg. 23 of Mike Petersen's 1955 Dodge by the numbers book:

"295 = Lancer-type moulding with two-tone paint...Wagon 34946869 has "SP5" on the trim plate.

296= Lancer-type moulding with three-tone (2 and 4 door sedans and wagons) Sapphire white (roof) as the third color".

So on that basis, I think SP 6 is justified if Phil's wagon to has the Lancer-type mouldings and maybe a white roof ???

Earlier today, Phil sent me some photos of this 55 Dodge Coronet Sierra (4 dr) V8 wagon. He asked me if I could resize and post some of the photos. I asked him for an engine bay photo.

Theses are some that he sent (note that his car has the accessory front bumper wings and the front bumper over-rider bar. Pretty deluxe for a Coronet, but then again, it has the Lancer side trim as shown below. I don't know if I see any signs of a white roof. (??)

So, what this color should be?
White roof – it is clear;
Red area between all windows and the saddle above Lancer molding and upper portion of the hood;
and finally white lower part of the body again…

Just a moment, I need to revise my notes...

At this point I don't see any white on the roof. As for the cameo red and white bits there is this previously posted (above) example:

And these new photos (which clearly shows the lower part was originally Sapphire white and the door post was Cameo Red):

Phil sent me some photos of his interior (the back of the front seat) and the engine bay. The interior seems to fit with what I was expecting for a "726" interior: White and red vinyl ("Cordagrain") some of which was embossed.

The engine bay shows the 270 poly 2 bbl base Coronet V8. Looks like a previous owner did some rewiring, perhaps at the same time there was a conversion to 12V and alternator. I also see a dual drum/drum master. Phils is having issues with his fuel gauge (probably still the 6V gauge, now receiving 12V - wagon gauges use a different measuring system than the non-wagons so I don't know what to tell him). Must be an electric fuel pump down there somewhere too because the fuel line comes from the firewall, not the front of the engine.

Some of Phil's (resized) photos (note the Cameo Red firewall peeking out):

That is a strange looking alternator, wonder what brand it is?

What if this is a Tri-Tone color combination? Jewell Black Roof, Sapphire White Upper and Cameo Red Lower? PAINT 70 and SP6
While a similar combo on the Lancer bodies should be PAINT 70 and SP3?

Igor: I only see the photos that Phil sent me and I posted above. I can't tell what the original colour of the roof was.

But in your paint code list above, Jewell Black Roof, Sapphire White Upper and Cameo Red Lower would be PAINT 70 and SP7 (not SP6).

I am holding out that there was a Paint Code 70 SP 6 with Sapphire White roof, Cameo Red saddle and Sapphire white lower.

We'll see. I am going to call in the "Big Guns", Mike Petersen, to give his opinion.

I emailed Mike P. regarding SP5, SP6 and SP7 for the 1955 Dodge's and the main part of his reply today was:

"Option 296 should have SP6 on the trim plate. 296 (Sapphire White insert color), 297 (Jewell Black insert color), and 298 (Cameo Red insert color) are codes for Lancer trim with three tone paint on Coronet and Royal sedans and wagons."

I have asked Phil L. to investigate the colour of the roof under that dark grey primer that the previous owner sprayed on the roof. Maybe eventually he will be able to confirm that the next layer down was Sapphire White (??)

Dave thanks for your asking in the “Big Guns”;
Just a minute for clear:
Is option 296 decoded Sapphire White INSERT color, or Sapphire White ROOF color?
I think ROOF is a roof color before the drip rail and the INSERT is an upper color before Lancer molding (upper portion of the doors and saddle, including hood);
And further below is a LOWER color…

It's the third colour and it was applied to the roof and maybe around the taillights.

Phil: Great photos. Still hoping for one of the roof showing the next layer down from that dark grey paint/primer. It will solve the SP6 issue on your cowl data tag.

As to why your photos won't open, the answer is Apple .jpegs do NOT work here, i.e. no iPhone or iPad .jpeg photos work.

Does any one know of a utility, maybe Irfanview (??), that will take a .jpeg and convert it to .jpg?

Answered my own question: Opened one of your .jpegs (that won't open here) with Irfanview, resized it to 1024 x 768 and saved it as a .jpg. Bob's yer Uncle.

Phil sent me a photo of his 55 Dodge wagon's roof he begins the paint removal.

He says "RE: the roof, I have rubbed a bit down (see below photo) And possibly none of the roof paint is original."

I see bare metal, red oxide primer, Cameo Red paint, some grey paint (primer?) and then some black. Black would make the most sense to me as the factory top coat as it fits with the SP6
designation.

But that might just be wishful thinking.

That is great news Phil. That worked because your 270 is a low deck engine, not like the raised deck 315 poly and hemi also used in 1956.

This was my suggestion (which luckily worked ):

56D500boy - 2021-10-27 7:23 AM
As for the distributor, I recently enquired about using an LA Block 273-318-340-360 electronic distributor on my 56 315 hemi and I was told that NO that will not work because the 315 block is a raised block and the LA blocks are shorter. So unless I got and longer distributor shaft, they would not work on *MY* engine.

HOWEVER, the 270 in 1956 is very likely a carry over from the 1953-1955 241-270 blocks which were NOT raised. Therefore, you will probably be able to use a LA Block 273-318-340-360 electronic distributor like these kits:

Phil: Based on your photos that were posted in the 56 Desoto Wagon Seat Removal thread, your car's original paint was definitely based on Heather Rose (probably with the Sapphire White bottom). What the original roof paint colour was, we might never know.

One of your rear seat removal photos showing the Heather Rose:

The Dodge is coming on a bit now the body has been stripped back to bare metal the door bottoms have been repaired and the body has been lacquered with satin clear coat not everyone’s taste I know ,the roof has been painted satin black ,17 inch Mustang wheels are now fitted and clearance made as required.,air bags fitted to rear for handling improvements , and a brake booster now enables modern car braking on discs all round.

The rusting on the side of the car has somehow occurred resizing the photo it is not rusty as the photo shows it is the same as the rest of the car
