Elite Veteran Posts: 1110 Location: Tulare Ca | Hey all, i just took the '58 out on its maiden voyage after sitting during a restore. I had put Dex/Merc in as that what i belevied was the correct fluid, I drove to the local sonic with only a minor issue of a weird 2-3 shift that i thought might have been from a kickdown being out of adjustment as it happened really soon after 1-2. And on the way home, I was suddenly having a problem of not upshifting at all, i was able to get a 1-2 shift by reving then letting off, but no 2-3. I pulled in and checked the fluid level and it was full, but it seemed pretty thin to me, is it possible that the wrong fluid is causing these issues? or something bigger? thanks!

Just Valvoline Dex/Merc I think it said dex IV but I can't remember 100% what it's equivalent was As for the kickdown link I'll definitely start there as I remembered that I had taken it completely off for the engine bay repaint and then never adjusted it when I put it back on

It is a mechanical way to tell the transmission what is going on load versus speed/throttle position. Nowadays, that information is translated as a electrical signal to the transmission computer. Back then (the 50's), this information was analogue/mechanical but it helped the transmission to mechanically "decide" to stay in that gear or upshift or downshift, as appropriate. It is not optional, it is necessary. wizard - 2019-01-25 11:24 PM Kickdown is a function in automatic transmissions, so the term kickdown is correct. However, the most important function for the throttle valve linkage is to supply compensated throttle pressure. example, let's assume that the accelerator pedal movement is restricted by the carpet so that a kickdown cannot occur- if the throttle valve linkage is otherwise correctly adjusted, this condition won't damage the transmission. If the throttle valve is wrongly, adjusted kickdown might occur, but at wrong speed/pressure. In this condition, or if the linkage is missing, the risk of damages are very high. So, adjust the linkage properly. You might call a duck cat, but don't expect it to swim well REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=70541&... Thank All!
