Extreme Veteran Posts: 304 Location: Rochester, NY | 57chizler…makes a lot of sense. I’ve heard of the reverse blocker…guards against someone accidentally pushing in R button while driving. Thanks for pointing that out. Think it’s way beyond my ability to fix it…been asking around for a good transmission guy here in upstate NY. Nothing yet but when I do find someone…I can certainly point him in that direction. Do you think it’s hurting anything by driving it this way? Right now being summer have been taking the car out when I know I should not need reverse. LOL | ||

Expert Posts: 3813 Location: NorCal | As long a it shifts OK otherwise, there's no harm driving it the way it is. As a side note, pay particular attention to how it downshifts when rolling to a stop; just before the car comes to a stop it should drop from 3rd directly to 1st. In cases where there is a governor malfunction, the car will stay in 3rd at a stop and might not be noticed after pulling away from a dead stop. If this happens, it shows that there is still governor pressure at a standstill and explains the Reverse problem. Next time you experience the "no Reverse" problem, let it idle in Neutral for several minutes to see if you can then engage Reverse. | ||

Extreme Veteran Posts: 304 Location: Rochester, NY | Last night took the car to a cruise in. Did not have to back into a parking spot so it worked out well. Was ready to leave after 1.5 hrs. I checked before I started up engine…couldn’t push in R button all the way. Sat there for a few more minutes…still couldn’t push in R button all the way. Waited a few more minutes…pushed in R again…it worked. I fired it up and checked again, sure enough…had reverse. I parked where I didn’t need it but was just curious how long it took to work again. Last night…at about 75 degrees…it took about an hour and 40 min. to cool off enough for R to engage/work properly. I’ll make some more observations as you’ve noted as I slow down. Thank you very much. | ||

Extreme Veteran Posts: 304 Location: Rochester, NY | Last night…the problem went away. And it’s done this before…I got to my destination/car cruise a good 20 miles away…a hot/humid night besides. I could push reverse button all the way in/it engaged fine and I had reverse. Even was able to parallel park at very busy cruise-in. Drove home from the car cruise/20 more miles…had reverse when I got home too. Fixed itself! That’s never a good fix. | ||

Veteran Posts: 110 Location: Palm Beach County Florida | I had great luck with "Lucas Transmission Fix". My 1956 CRL with Powerflite was bucking when slowing to a stop like I forgot to depress the clutch. The only way I found to eliminate the bucking was to shut the engine off when coming to stop light. The car had been sitting in a museum for 15 years when I bought it. I had changed the trans fluid along with the brake fluid, engine oil and antifreeze when I bought it. I suspected a sticky valve body and I tried the Lucas. The problem cleared up within two days and has not returned. | ||
