Expert 5K+ Posts: 7529 Location: northern germany | I changed to 1.6 roller rockers the past year with great success, but in the back of my head I always had the increased weight with more valve lift and some valve seat recession, so I stayed away from full throttle runs so far. Surprisingly there was no valve float at 135 mph with all these factors, increased weight, stock 370K miles valve springs and valve seat recession (reduced spring compression), but I always wanted TI retainers anyway. So I lucked into a very cheap set of Titanium retainers for some other make and engine (don't have the manufacturer or part number) that had surprisingly the same dimensions as OE 60 big block retainers, except for the (smaller) conical part, which was a good thing, as I could machine the compressed height into them, to compensate for the seat recession and to add a bit more stiffness. When I bought them I thought, it can't be a big deal to find a 7° reamer in the once industrial nation Germany. Wrong. It turned out to be impossible. Fortunately I found a way to turn a cheap straight adjustable reamer into a conical adjustable reamer! (First picture) I worked like a charm and when I was halfway thru, I received a note from some outlet I contacted, that I can't machine Titanium with HSS and they offer me a reamer for about $600.... the reamer I modified was $9.50 and worked perfectly.... The question: I noticed that the valve locks for intake an exhaust valves work differently. The exhaust ones circle the valve stem completely, so that there is no direct pressure on the stem and it can rotate freely. The intake ones don't and clamp the valve stem, they also add more spring compression. At first I thought this is an early BB thing only, so I ordered new ones from Rock Auto. Waste of money, same design and on top of that, incorrect angle (more about that in this http://forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=78762&post... thread!) Why did they design it that way? PS the head picture is from my other 1960 383, I canged the retainers on the car, didn't remove the heads. The retainers work great and remove about 200 Gramms/7+ Ounces(!) of reciprocating mass from the valve train. They weight about 40% of the steel ones and as they sit in the most crucial place in the valve train, this should compensate for the increased weight of the roller rockers. Expert Posts: 3441 Location: Chestertown, NY ( near Lake George) | The titanium retainers I used on my Maxwedge426 race engine were 10 degree keeper style, the valves were the stock oe parts. With the aggressive roller cam we ran I also used lash caps. Had to be aware of rocker arm geometry and push rod length of course | ||
