Regular Posts: 82 Location: Okielahoma | Planning my drivetrain getting rid of the iron torqeflight, thinking about using a 62-64 727. I like the idea of the 63 park pawl but don't know what's involved in it, for instance can a 62 727 get the cables and lever and brackets for the pawl hooked up to it or are there internal differences? If it just cables and stuff, how much newer a trans does that stuff fit, when did the park lever cease to be offered and why? Was it only used at the end of the pushbutton era? There's a 62 within driving distance but I either want the 63 park lever or go even newer to a 518 with overdrive, still weighing all the options. Thanks for response. Jim in Tulsa

The Park mechanism is unique to the pre-'66 transmissions, it consists of an internal mechanism housed in an external housing which accepts the Park cable. The push button shifter had a separate Park lever but the '64 console shifter and all '65 shifters did away with it with the introduction of the Park position in the shifter. In '66 the Park position was incorporated in the shift lever. If the '62-'65 trans mechanism is in place and complete, it's a simple matter of inserting and adjusting the Park cable. For cars with no existing Park cable or dash lever, a separate lever will be needed. To use the '66-later trans with a pre-'62 push button shifter, some ingenuity is involved but, for the '62-'64 PB shifters, Imperial Services offers a solution.

The only catch is that most of those '62-'65 cables are too short. So you will likely have to find a longer cable or purchase one from Imperial Services.

Regular Posts: 82 Location: Okielahoma | So if a 727 has the drum on the tail it won't have the park provision, is that a correct statement? The trans chosen would be paired with a mild mannered 400 b block stroker, i've read about having the early 727 rebuilt with a 24 spline shaft I think for the availability of a torque converter, seems straightforward. The next question is how would that swap compare to installing a 518 overdrive unit? not finding much information on that swap, maybe it's not a very popular swap for some reason, love the idea of overdrive but don't want a toggle switch, I'd want it to function automatically if there's a way to do that. I want the wife to able to drive this car by just pushing in the D button and pressing the pedal, that's the goal. I'll have to check with Imperial Services to see if there's a cable or switch shift option for the 518. Edited by jwheath68 2023-11-24 4:51 PM

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10016 Location: So. Cal | I've converted 2 cars to overdrive with an automatic transmission. My experiences is that the overdrive wasn't worth the trouble. It doesn't feel significantly better than a 3 speed 727 with 2.76 highway gears in the back. You could make it possible to use a 518 with the push button shifter, but you won't get park or 1st gear with it. You won't notice the difference between overdrive vs. non-overdrive, but you will notice a difference between not having park or 1st, vs. having them.

Regular Posts: 82 Location: Okielahoma | thanks fellas for the information, are some years btwn 62-65 better than others? maybe more favorable ratios for a heavier car, maybe a little beefier for an Imperial, less so for a Windsor or all the same? Find one, rebuild it and go....?

Expert Posts: 3813 Location: NorCal | With the exception of the Max Wedge and Hemi, there wasn't a lot of internal differences in the '62-'65 BB 727. Plus, after 50+ years, you never know what has been done to the insides...opening one is kinda like Christmas morning.

Regular Posts: 82 Location: Okielahoma | 57chizler, was that you talking about updating to a 24 spline shaft? I thought i read that when first starting to do research, if so, could you elaborate or offer any other upgrades while it's being rebuilt? 59 Dodge loaded two door with about 450 HP, 290ish highway gear rear end, do you have a reccomendation for a converter?

Expert Posts: 3813 Location: NorCal | The main reason to upgrade the 24-spline input is converter selection. The list of other upgrades is too numerous to list here but, basically, replace everything in the front of the case (pump, clutches, gearset) with '71-later.
