My ignition switch in my 1960 Fury with 370 000 miles started to become a bit difficult to turn sometimes recently in the cold. Never removed or touched it before. I usualy lubricate the hell out of everything and add grease nipples and oilers to everything and don't wait until somethings starts to get stuck, but when it come to switches with plastic and insulations, I usualy stay away from lubing. However, I had no other choice and removed, cleaned and lubed it with teflon grease. Works as before now and I hope nothing dissolves.

My question:

When I removed it, I was very surpised to find a 4 prong switch with a weird (needless?) plastic tower in the back. I always thought it is 5 prong. Ign2 is missing. They added "ignition 2" for the 1960 model years and my car has is too (full 12V during starting) and my shop manual shows a 5 prong switch. Also my 60 Desoto, build in December 1959, and my 61 Plymouth have a 5 prong switches. So "ign2" works via the starter here.

Is that an early production thing? My 60 Fury was build in September of 1959. Has anybody ever seen a 4 spades Mopar switch? I always thought I can easily replace it, when it goes bad. I do not want to change the OE wiring and OE connector! The 4 spades plug does not fit the 5 spade switch. I'm scared now.

Here's the '60 Chrysler 5 prong ignition switch Sid.
For comparison, see also the newer 6 prong ignition switch (GRD added)

The 5th contact is for ign2 which is full 12V during cranking. But apparently this can be handled via the starter contact too, like on my car, so I have no idea why they added it. Later they added for whatever reason a 6th (ground) contact.

Thanks Sven. Yes, in the later 60s they added yet another contact. I bought ignorantly a cheap used 1968 Mopar switch off eBay Germany years ago, trusting the books, that say 60-68 all interchange, which is not the case.
All These years I thought I need a 5 prong switch, which is already rare, but that I actually need a 4 prong piece, surprised me. Never ever saw one before and my OE 4 contact plug does not fit the 5 prong switch!

I have a Chrysler service bulletin dated January 7, 1960 which covers the change to the new ignition switch. It bypasses the ballast resistor while starting to give more power to the coil. It states that if you need to install the 5 contact switch, the plug needs to be removed and 4 individual connector ends placed on the wires. A fifth wire and connector is used just to protect the exposed extra terminal on the switch. They give a color chart but this is for Chrysler, so yours may be different.

Terminal/Color

ACC/Black
ST/Yellow
BAT/Red
IGN-1/Dark Blue
IGN-2/Dark Brown (the extra terminal)

Thank Nick! I have lots of 1960 service bulletins, but not this one. My 60 Fury has the bypass feature for full 12V during starting too, with unmolested factory wiring. As I said, it works via the starter terminal. Colors are the Same.
Funny, the January 7 date, since all 1960 FSM (that came out in 1959) show
the bypass feature and the 5 Terminal switch. ?

Just checked my 1960 Desoto FSM, printed in December of 1959, which covers Chrysler and Imperial too. All the ignition switches in the wiring diagrams are the 5 terminal type. Just as my 60 Plymouth FSM, from September or October of 1959. Also my December 1959 60 Desoto with OE wiring, has the 5 terminal switch.

Does the service bulletin mention the part number for the 4-terminal switch, Nick?

Here is the bulletin, it covers two factories for Chrysler. The new switch part number is 2097628. Note that it says that a wiring harness with 5 leads was used since start of production but the extra wire was not connected to the ignition switch.

There would have been separate bulletins for the other makes.

I'm still disturbed that I don't have 5 terminal switch I have a packrat personality, I need a backup, even if I never need need it (very likely). So if someone has a good used 4 pin ignition switch that he wants to sell, please let me know.
