Location: Gooding, ID | Just acquired this 1961 Chrysler New Yorker, and the steering wheel is still salvageable as no chunks have disintegrated. There are a few cracks, but I'll fill those in with plexi glass and acetone mix. However, is there a way to clean the inside translucent upper and lower level from brownish dirt, or would i have to get the whole steering wheel restored professionally to accomplish this?

Location: Ramona, CA | The brown bits are rust spots from the chrome rim. I've had two wheels restored by Dennis in California. Not cheap but done the correct way with the color cast into colored part. Although the color didn't come out right on my silver wheel for my wagon. There is someone in Europe that casts the whole wheel in clear and then paints the colored part. Last time I checked it was less than half than Dennis.

On my 300F wheel, I used one I had from a parts car where most of the clear was broken off. I used steel wool to remove the rust spots from the chrome. Dennis recrhomed the rim anyway. On the wagon, I had the original wheel redone.
In the 300F album there are a couple pictures of the wheel where the top rim wasn't in the middle of the clear. He had to redo the whole wheel.

Location: Gooding, ID | Wow, that's looking fantastic! What was the turn around time? No doubt it changes the whole complexion of the instrument panel, becomes the heart and soul of the interior. I'll call San Diego and see what the current pricing is, as cleaning the inside rust sounds to be impossible. |

I did the wagon one at the beginning of Covid so it took a while. The silver came out too light but it matches the color in the door panels.
I don't have the contact for the one in Europe that does them but can find out. |

Lots of wheels from the era would fit. No tilt wheels, and I don't know about Imperial ones fitting with the dome.
On the steering wheel Kris site gallery he shows a 61 Newport with a 63-64 rectangular wheel.
BTW, did Magnus give you a price? |

I've had a wheel with Kris for over 3 1/2 years for my 40 Chrysler, I did get a wheel from him a few months ago that was not mine! Pretty disappointed so far, has had loads of excuses as to why it has taken so long but I know of others who have had a turnaround inside 12 months. Still no wheel for my completed car, oh and he is very pricey! |

Best case scenario would be to find a second steering wheel in worse condition than the one I already have, and ship it off instead.
That way if it's lost or it takes 3 years, I'll still have the original steering wheel which isn't awful and can still be used.
I guess however that you have to take some chances in life, and hope for the best. We'll see how I play this,
haven't made up my mind quite yet!  |

My original 300F wheel was pretty good so I used a worse one from a parts car to get restored. Then I used my old 300F wheel on my wagon while that one was being restored.
I don't know for sure if a 1960-61 solid color wheel from the lower models is the same inside and could be used to be restored into a clear wheel. Maybe Magnus knows the answer. I know in 1962, the higher end ones were only clear on the top and the plastic style of the spokes is different to accommodate the horn ring. If you find out, let us know. |
