I have stainless steel sleeves in all my brake cylinders but I can't find plungers to use when I rebuild them so they aren't working very well.

Does anyone know where you can buy the original style two part plungers?

Is anyone finding a new rear wheel cylinder that is working good for them?

Sam

Sam: I think that your car's original rear wheel brake cylinders were PN 1311 536 (1311536 when searching).

There are a number of aftermarket alternatives, e.g. Dorman W10588 and Raybestos WC10588 (probably the same thing)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/195203439095

https://www.amazon.ca/Raybestos-WC10588-Professional-Grade-Cylinder/...

There are also repair kits available, depending on the inner diameter of the wheel cylinder, e.g. Dorman 11304 for the 1.125" cylinders (you need two kits per side and reuse the push pins)

Dorman and Raybestos are all Chineseum made --- and are known for issues, as they have NO Q.C. ( Quality Control) ...... spit out speedily.....

If you would prefer U.S.A. made, I have all 6 Brand New, the 4 " halfsies " Fronts, and the 2 Rears.... or separately, whatever you want.....

Price is $ 45 each for the Fronts == $ 180 , $ 59 each for the Rears == $ 118 ; which totals $ 298 ===>>> reduced to $ 260 // for the set of six ( 6)......

Always best to simply call me --- 516 - 485 - 193five --- Craig.....

Thanks Dave and Craig. Thanks a lot. I'll study this and get back to you. I've really been struggling with a few things on my car and haven't been able to login. The rear wheel cylinders have been a headache for me for years now.

Thanks for always helping me find stuff Dave...

I would trust both Raybestos and Dorman. They are quality brands. Just because parts are made overseas doesn't automatically mean that they are bad. I'd hesitate to use vintage or NOS wheel cylinders, since the rubber could be dried out or cracked.

Thanks for everyone's help...

I have stainless steel sleeves in all of my brake cylinders so I would like to keep them and rebuild them. I can get the cups and springs. For the back, I used Raybestos WK112. These cups must be used with the two part plunger (Piston and Expander separate). I have one good set of Piston and Expander from my pre 1975 parts that came with the car. I have some one piece Piston/Expander plungers that I don't know where I got and they will work for a couple of years but are not right for the cups you can buy.

The parts I need to rebuild my cylinders (and I'm sure everyone needs these) is the Expander which is original part number 1140.752 and the Piston which is original part number 1140.493. You can see these on Dave's post above as part 5-72-1 and 5-70-1. In the old days, the cylinder rebuild kits came with these new parts but now they just come with new rubber parts.

It may be that I just have to give up on my stainless steel sleeved wheel cylinders.

Thanks for always helping me find stuff Dave...

Hiltop Mopar's site was down yesterday, otherwise I might have found you this (below).

That said, Craig's prices are way better.

Thanks Dave, This is one way to get the plungers. I also need and everyone else will also need the part that connects the wheel cylinder to the brake shoe. That part used to come with wheel cylinder repair kits too. I'll keep looking for a while.

I didn't realize they are all the same from 1946 to 1956. That should help with availability.

Like these pins (aka "BRAKE SHOE PUSH ROD") in the Dorman wheel cylinder "kits". Why can you re-use what you have?

PN for the rods is 1140 067

What am I seeing on these expanders and pistons? Rust or varnish? I am thinking varnish. Silicone brake fluid.

???

I sure like your pictures Dave... Very helpful. My pins were in the car while it sat for 40 years. The part of the pin that touches the Piston is badly pitted from rust. I live in a humid climate and that along with steel and aluminum touching and the galvanic action pitted the pins bad. They still work but I would rather have pins that weren't pitted.

Thanks for your information Craig. I'm glad to know brake shoes are available... Do you think your wheel cylinders have the two part pistons, a piston and a piston cup expander?

I think just a varnish of some kind. I have something on mine that is more solids and thicker. I use dot4 brake fluid. Your pistons look like a one piece unit like the ones I had on my car. I think I got this type of piston from Andy Bernbaum back in 2011. I'm not sure which option is better, the one piece piston or the two piece piston.

I *THINK* that I like the original two-piece piston/expander design. Based on what I am seeing, the intent was that the expander would slide on a "pin" on the back of the piston and push on the rubber cup.

Because the leading edge of the expander was tapered it would fit into the back side of the cup and as pressure was applied to the back of the expander, it would slide towards the outward face of the piston and,
in doing so, squeeze the rubber cup out to the wheel cylinder bore, better sealing the cup to the bore.

With a one piece piston, I don't see how the cup seals against the bore except based on the stiffness/flexibility of the cup material.

While I might think that the original wheel cylinder piston design had separate PNs for the piston and expander, 1140 493 and 1140 752, respectively, as per the original listing
for repair kit, PN 1643 178, apparently at some point somebody decided that the two piece thing was not needed as per a currently available 1643 178 kit:

Thanks for finding this kit Dave. There's one more kit on EBay also. These two kits will get me 4 original style pistons and expanders. I need a total of 8 pistons. I have 3 good ones so with these, I'll only need one more.

Just need to check something on my front wheels before I buy. I think this will really fix me up on brake cylinders.

Here's a data point on brake cylinder pistons for 1955/1956 Plymouths for whatever it's worth.

My dad parked my car in the garage in 1978. In 2010 or 2011, I rebuilt the wheel cylinders.

The back brake wheel cylinders had the two part pistons in them. They could have been original from 1955 or they could have been replaced sometime before 1978.

The front brake wheel cylinders had the one part pistons in them. I think these pistons had been replaced sometime before 1978 and were not original from 1955. These one part pistons were longer on the pin side of the piston as compared to the aluminum colored ones above but other than that, the same.

So it seems like "they" decided one piece pistons were acceptable sometime before 1978. Which design is really better, I don't know, but I'm going to get the two part kits Dave found and try them out.

Rock Auto has Raybestos Wheel Cylinder rebuild kits (WK112) on their closeout list for $3.52. That's a real good price. I've used the WK112 on my 1955 Plymouth and they work great.
