Veteran Posts: 299 Location: Rochester, NY | 58 Plymouth with 64 Torqueflite. I have reason to believe there’s a heavy leak coming from above the transmission pan on driver side. I’m thinking it’s the shift linkage seal. I’ve got car up on lift to work on it. Going to drop what oil is left in it. Is changing that seal difficult? Any advice appreciated. Thank you, Bob

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9924 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . I don't know much about 727 torqueflites but I think that a leak on the left (driver's) side can happen at four possible points: 1. At the neutral safety switch 2. At the park cable 3. The shift cable adjusting point 4. At the shifter shaft seal Confirm which one is the actual problem. Expert Posts: 3780 Location: NorCal | here is no shift "linkage" seal, the lever with linkage is the kickdown and that seal is easy to change. Remove the lever and the washer below it and pry out the seal...it's all rubber...new one pushes back in easily. But, before digging in, spray the area with brake cleaner to remove the leakage and determine the actual source of the leak with a flashlight and mirror. As Dave noted, common leak spots are the KD shaft seal, dipstick tube, NSS, the rear band lever pivot pin, shift cable, Park cable and the cooler line fittings.

Veteran Posts: 299 Location: Rochester, NY | Thanks guys. I pinpointed leak awhile ago by wrapping a rag around it must be kick down linkage I’m thinking. Will check all mentioned areas though. Sure enough it was leaking right off the rag instead of one of the pan bolts on driver side. I’ll see if I can duplicate it and take photo. Not sure if I know how to post photo here though.

Veteran Posts: 299 Location: Rochester, NY | So with car up on hoist, I cut a rag into long thin strips and tied them around each possible leak point. The kick down linkage is the only place it’s leaking and it’s leaking real bad. Thanks for all the tips. Think NAPA would be a good source for that little seal? I’ve got to read that last link yet…I take it the pan and fluid have to be dropped to replace.

No, as I stated earlier, loosen the pinch bolt on the lever, remove the lever and the washer below it and pry out the seal...it's all rubber...new one pushes back in easily. When the old seal is removed, some fluid might run out...be prepared to catch it.

Veteran Posts: 299 Location: Rochester, NY | I appreciate all the replies and info. Thank you. I’m sure it’s the kick-down linkage shaft seal as I tied a thin rag on it and all other leak prone connections. It’s only kick down linkage seal that’s leaking. I have the part number…Thank you but can’t find it. Have called local parts stores. Where do I find 2466584 o-ring? Edited by furvedere 2024-04-23 5:51 PM

Veteran Posts: 299 Location: Rochester, NY | I looked at the link by Zorc. Looks like you possibly used some RTV on new o-ring. Is that proper to use RTV to keep o-ring in place? I got the old one out. Mine didn’t have any adhesive but it also leaked like sieve. What do you guys think? I got new o-ring in mail. I’m ready to install. Thanks. Expert Posts: 3780 Location: NorCal | No need for any sealer, just push it in...the washer under the lever helps to keep it square when installing.
