Member Posts: 17 | My right signal works but left does not. Checked wiring from column and only the right hand signal wire has power. Pulled steering wheel to see what's what and found this Can't figure out how ANY of it works. Does anyone know what the little copper tab laying there in the bottom of the picture almost at 6:00 does? It doesn't look like it belongs there to me. Member Posts: 17 | OK, Found the switch itself and cleaned it up with some brake kleen and it All works fine now. Before I re-install the steering wheel, does anyone know where that little copper tab goes that's just laying there in the bottom of the picture? It doesn't look right to me. | ||

It doesn't look right to me. Yes, it's part of the assembly. It functions as a spring when the top plate is actuated to signal a turn and subsequently when the turn signal lever is triggered to return to the neutral position. When you separate the top and bottom plates of the assembly, you'll see where it should be located. There should be one (or maybe two ?) other springs in there as well. Ron | ||

Member Posts: 17 | HI ronbo97. When I separate the top and bottom what exactly? As it sits there right now with that tab laying there touching nothing the signals all work fine after cleaning the switch. I never took it apart any farther than in the picture. | ||

Member Posts: 17 | There is a mark on the underside of the steering wheel center that lines up with where this tab (spring) is located and there is evidence that the surface all the way around is warn from contacting something. I placed the spring on the wheel in the second pic to show where it has been riding. There has also been a faint scraping noise when turning the wheel for some time. Could it be that that spring belongs there and needs some kind of lube or did it fall there some time ago and shuold not be rubbing at all? Member Posts: 17 | Well I re-installed the wheel to see where everything lined up and that tab (spring) isn't within a half inch of contacting the back of the wheel. The clean scraped part of the wheel is from where the spring loaded horn contact drags on it. No idea what that tab (spring) does or where it goes but everything seems to work fine without it at all? Odd. | ||

Expert Posts: 4115 Location: Connecticut | Is that metal piece glued in place, or is it just laying there ? Can you measure its length and width ? When you actuate the directional signal, then turn the wheel, does it cancel and return the stalk to the center ? Try both left and right. Without that spring, the directional signal may fail to cancel when you recenter the wheel after making your turn. I shake my head when people fail to understand that parts were installed for a reason. Also, yes, there is a black wire coming out of the horn button. But there also needs to be a wire coming from the copper plate. That wire completes the circuit. There is a recessed area where the spring resides. So you have to loosen the phillips-head screws, or likely remove the upper part of the assembly, in order to insert the spring in the correct location. Ron Edited by ronbo97 2024-04-24 8:55 PM | ||

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10033 Location: So. Cal | It's very common for that spring to come out like that, just from putting downward pressure on the turn signal stalk. I recommend cleaning the area really well and using 2 dabs of silicone to hold the spring ends into the recess. Once it cures, it will prevent it from popping out again in the future. | ||
