If it is a stock motor, it is most likely a 361 4bbl. D-500 got the 383. On the front boss, right below the distributor, you will find some coding stamped. Yours should read ML-361 for 1959-361 or ML-383 for 1959-383.

Mine reads MC 1 / - and underneath that reads 171990. On the side of the block number is 19449295 L.S. Behind the waterpump reads 10248 3. Do you think you can figure out anything from these? Any info would be much appreciated!!! Thank you

Is this the car that just sold in the Ft. Worth, Texas area? If so, I know it quite well and it is a Canadian built Custom Royal. In 1959, the Custom Royal was the only Dodge model built in Canada that looked like its US counterparts--all other models were half Plymouth and half Dodge. Anyway, there are quite a few differences between the Canadian built Custom Royals and the US built ones. The Canadian cars used smaller hubcaps (they didn't cover the wheel all the way to the edge), they used different interior fabrics and materials, had different paint colors, offered a 361 2-bbl engine as standard (4-bbl optional), used a '57 to '58 style radio, had "Chryco" on all mats and accessories, have a very different cowl mounted ID plate, and a whole bunch of other differences. I own a 100% original "survivor" Canadian built Custom Royal and have collected a lot of info on it--it is really a neat car.
I looked quite closely at the Texas car, and I believe that it does have a 383 engine in it (which was available in Canadian Dodges, but was called the D500 with the D500 emblems on the side of the fins) , but I don't think it is the original motor. I'm not certain of that, but the codes don't seem to match the '59 383 codes. That doesn't really make much difference, but the codes might be a little difficult to decipher because of that. Anyway, it really is a neat car and should provide a lot of enjoyment for you. Good luck!

Wow, .... if it is Canadian built, all bets are off! As I have mentioned in other threads concerning this concept, Chrysler (and other makes) found mysterious wisdom in tossing their entire product line in the blender and selling the end results to non-US markets. No one has ever given me an satisfactory reason why they didn't just sell regular models and avoid all the special costs, but just like the sun comes up in the east, that is just how it worked! No reason needs to be given.
If it is a US car, M designates the year 1959, L was for 58. Not sure what ML means .... I am kinda rusty on this after being away from it for a while.

I have 2 Fireflite engines sitting here in the shop. One reads ML 383 with the sequence number below that. This one came out of a 59 4HT. The other reads L-360 with the sequence number below that, and is a late 58. This coding is found on the angled boss that kinda hides under the distributor cap.
Some read just "36" to signify 361, why this one reads "360" (with the zero), I do not know. I really need to stick my nose back into my books.

Be aware that there are two REALLY different 383's in the early years. One was a Chrysler, and was a high block (413) bored to 361 spec's, more or less making a long stroke 383 displacement. As I understand it, these were real dogs, and Chrysler opted for the DeSoto version to be used corporate wide after a short period and dropped the other design. Can someone fill us in on what those long stroke 383's are coded as, and what years they were in production?
