Hi, gang. Here's a pic of the D500-1 intake I recently purchased, after celebrating MLK day by cleaning it up! I also cleaned up the carburetors, just for fun. Still don't know what I'll do with the stuff, but I'm having a blast learning all about the "Dash one". I have to admit real ignorance until a few weeks ago. BTW, the intake manifold alone WEIGHS 8 POUNDS. Truly made for racing!

What year and motor.

Yes it is aluminium!
it is a special race manifold made for the 1956 Dodge.
Very rare!

I forgot to mention that it is not aftermarket!
It was made by Carl Kiekhaefer for Chrysler corporation and even carries a MoPar part number
Carl is known for racing Chryler 300s in 1955 and was pretty sucessful with the 56 Dodges in 1956 and was even factory sponsored

I thought the D-501's were all '57s??? Very cool picture! I don't think I've ever seen one before, but I've heard a lot about them. All cleaned up, it looks great.

Mike, I don't know all the little things about the differences, the years, and things like that. I do know that folks refer to this as a D500-1, not a D501. Seems there's a "cult following" to the vehicles, and the model is lovingly referred to just as a "dash one". It is for a 1956 Dodge 315 hemi, I believe.

Hey! don't go around telling people I am in a CULT!
Word might get back to my wife who thinks it is nothing more than a real bad addiction!
Yes 315CI Hemi in a 56 Dodge
Everyone knows(?) that Chrysler shot thier first round in the horsepower wars with the Chrysler 300 in 1955.
And most people are aware in 1956 Desoto introduced the Adventurer with Dual quads
the 1956 Plymouth Fury got the Fury series but it was powered by a single 4-barrel as standard equipment however a dual quad setup was available as a dealer installed option (a very rare one)
The Dodge series had a 500 in 1954 when it paced the Indy 500 in 1954 that had a 4-barrel manifold on a pace car replicas but the series had a sigle 4-barrel version in 1956 in the standard D500 series. But a dealer installed option was available for local track racers that was refered to as the D500-1.
Obviously finding one today is a like finding a needle in a hay feild in Kansas.
I sold a lot of my factory correspondence that refered to these optional high performance setups years ago so I have to go by memory!

Well, that explains it.

My Chrysler book didn't list a 500-1.....just the 501.

If it was a dealer installed option, it wouldn't have a listing.

I thought it was a hemi, but didn't know for sure.

Thanks for the little history lesson.

The D-500-1 was a 1956 315 & fast for the time. I believe there was a suspension pkg too w/it & available on limited models.
The D501 was a Coronet only option available as 354 Chrylser 300B engine in a 1957.

That's great info on the "dash 1s". I hadn't heard about that 'til now. I have read that the 501s were all heater delete cars - straight from the factory, ready for the track. I don't know if all the 501s were full-on clock delete + radio delete too. If the dash 1s were dealer installed, I guess some had heater deletes and some didn't and they ran the full gammut of models?

Ed,

Just a though. Maybe you need a '57 Firesweep to make a home for the intake. Besides, it would complete your '57 Desoto line up.

Geoff, are you trying to get my wife to divorce me?

(Besides, this intake wouldn't fit on the 325 poly -- at least I don't think so!)

Ed...That manifold would fit a 325 poly. They have the share the intakes with the 315/325 hemis.

Hey Ed nice manifold. I believe in 1957 a d-500 was a 325Hemi with One four bbl and a d-500-1 was a 325 hemi with 2-4bbls. A d-501 was a nascar engine which was a leftover 56 Chrysler 300b 354 Hemi. The intake manifolds were the same on all Dodge 315-325 motors whether they were Polys or Hemis. If that manifold is for a Dodge 315-325 and you want to cut it loose I could use it. If it is for a 354Hemi I can't use it. Any factory intakes for 1956 or 1957 that I ever saw were cast iron and weighed 40-50 lbs.

Someone posted on another thread results from the Barrett Jackson car auction about a 56 Dodge lancer that sold for $200K http://www.barrett-jackson.com/events/scottsdale/vehicles/cardetail...
I did not bother clicking the link till this morning but last night I made a smart ass remark about it would be worth more with a D500-1 intake setup.
Well open mouth insert foot!
It does have the D500-1 intake setup and that is why it pulled $200K.
This should give you an idea of just how rare the setup you have is!
They say in the listing that the car is a California only model?? I am not sure where they get that from as the Custom Royal Lancer series (and the D500 series) were available nation wide! I would love to see pictures of this car. I also wonder of it has the 11 inch brakes that came with the dash1 option?
So many questions, so little time!

Hi Swanny,

Would you happen to still have that intake manifold AND sell it?
I am deeply interested...

Hi guys!

I´m new to this forum but own 1957 Dodge Coronet Custom Royal D-500 with 325 Hemi (with engine code KD-500-1xxx). I will start restoring it back to its former glory within next two weeks time, just purchased it so it takes some time to learn whats available for it. So far it doesn´t seem too bad! Its going to be a keeper, so I don´t care is the restoration worthwile moneywise.

But hey, I also need 2x4 manifold for my car! I will pay a good price for one as I want to have my car complete. So if anyone is selling such item, or knows where to get one - please let me know!

Btw, this forum is great source for info! Thanks!

Hi All, I do not get on here often but I own a 56 D500-1. I can tell you it is largley misunderstood. A true "Model" it had many standard features as well as an impressive options list. It is mostly confused because the Dual Quad manifold was not available when the model was introduced and they later were passed out to racers at the Daytona Beach race. The larger exhaust manifolds were introduced even later. Eventually I believe complete cars were produced and delivered with the dual carb set up and larger exhaust. One supporting fact of this is that NASCAR eventually allowed the upgraded HP to be listed on the hood of racecars denoting a "stock" production engine. The car I own would seem to support the factory assembly as it has a complete exhaust manifolds and pipe sections that still have Chrysler part numbers visible. It also has a code for customer pickup at the factory. Very fast for its time and extremely rugged. Tim in Golden Co.

Hey Tim....

Glad to see you on our forums. You ought to post a few "teaser" photographs of your D500-1 for the uninformed to see.
A GREAT shot would be that unusual large oval paper element Purolater Air Cleaner those rigs (and the 56 Fury) sported!

You need to make sure the photos are individually under 100k to post on the forums, with exception of the album section which I believe to be 150k per photo!

Here are photos of the 2 1/2 inch exhaust manifolds, pictured with regular D500 manifolds for comparison. They are extremely rare as they were not used on any other application except the D500-1.

Well, that $110.00 'translates' to about $1k, in Now-Money; not too cheap, for 'just' OEM carbs, and intake manifolding.

Please remember, there was no "collectibility" value, to any of these parts, then; a fairly-high tariff, from the Factory, in exchange for all the
promotional-value that Deadler could have realized, had the cars' success, at Daytona, been fully realized.

And, the fact that "nobody" , outside our small-circle-of friends, actually knows what a 56 D-500-1, and/or a 57 D501 "was", speaks volumes about
how the cars were NOT promoted.
