Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | I say yes. Driveshaft is only a week out. Tranny is mounted, just have to hook up the cables. Found a 62 shifter assembly with the parking lever, so I am going to work on adapting that for my park... Should have the engine back at the end of this week. Everything else is all new and ready to be bolted in!

Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | Lookie here! Ok... after a minor snafu with the engine to trans mounting (make sure the center hub fits in the receptacle in the crankshaft before you put it all together! I pulled my torque off, ground off the lip that was around it, and it all went together then! Now on to my mounts. Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | I bought the carbs outright from Vintage Speed. They have a website. You should check them out. I don't know if they rebuild em though. That hot rod silver finish would look great on some AFBs though.

Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | Well, the mounts are done, lots of parts on... just waiting for the heads to get back from the engine guy! Next step is getting the new pulleys pressed on the power steering pump and the alternator, and I will be ready to get that stuff together... Kind of in a holding pattern now until I get the heads! Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | Here is some more progress. I am slightly worried about the fit of the Intake manifold, but at this point I am going to leave it as is and try to fire it. If there are any issues, then well, I am out a set of intake gaskets, but if it did seal good, then I am out nothing! You will notice the tight hood spacing to the carbs. It does close, but man is that front carb close to the hood. It is far enough away I can see its reflection though. Boy, now I know why they use those T handles for the valve covers, them things are a bear to get bolts in! Just barely squeaked the passenger side one past the heater box. In fact, I think I scratched it getting it on! So what do you guys think so far? I should be able to get it really close this next weekend, as I don't have my daughter, which means saturday and sunday I can work hard and see where it gets me. Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | I may have too, but I have some ways I might be able to get a little more clearance. The adaptors for the carbs from vintage speed could lose about a half inch of height if I had to. that may happen. The front one is the worst. The engine sits with a slight backward angle to it, so the back carb is lower than the front one. We will see how it all works out though. If I have to, I will run it that way though. Maybe fab some simple screens to go over the top.... that is a 77 400 by the way...

Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | Nice. I used to have the parts to make a 451 for my '66 Charger (440 crank in a 400 block, with mains turned down to fit). Never did it though. You might consider a T-bird hood scoop like Mike P did. I think this looks great. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/get-attachment.asp?action=... Or, send that intake down to the local machine shop and have them machine the carb mounting pad an inch or so lower, then re-tap the carb mounting holes. That intake looks like it could handle it no problem. Good luck man! I really like that BB in there!

Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | Well, I am going for the sleeper look with mine, hence the goal to keep it under the hood, or else I do think that looks nice. My overall goal though is a 59 with a heck of an engine underhood that looks like a 6 banger powered car from the outside. The only exterior mods are hollywood flipper hubcaps and the stainless drip rail molding I added, though I am planning on doing carpet and adding rear seat belts pretty quick.

My overall goal though is a 59 with a heck of an engine underhood that looks like a 6 banger powered car from the outside......." I hear you, That was my intent too, just couldn't get the hood to close. A couple of tips for what their worth...... You'll want to run as big an air cleaner(s) as possible on your carbs. The small round ones tend to act as chokes on anything over 325 CI engines. I can't tell from from the pictures if your running large or small base Rochester's, if they are large base units they should be OK with progressive linkage. If they are small base units they may work with synchronized linkage(all carbs opening at the same time), or you may want to consider changing the center over to a large base unit. If you don't have linkage, let me know and I can post a couple of examples of some I have built. Something that would really help the 440 is a set of 68-70 C Body Hi Performance exhaust manifolds, besides looking cool, they flow as well as headers till the higher RPM ranges. They will also fit well, but would require modifying your head pipes. If your running the stock 77 440 water pump housing a 69-70 Impala Big Block radiator is a fairly simple upgrade that only requires building a couple of spacers and redrilling the bolt holes in the core support. You will also have to re-rout your tranny cooler lines. Generally speaking a 3 row is more than adequate to cool the 440. Thought I'd pass it along for what it's worth.

Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | Bought an after market aluminum water pump housing that has the hose on the correct side. So that is solved... I am going to choose between the 77 manifolds from the 400 and the ones from the 413.. May mix and match, as I know I will have to change the head pipes anyway... the radiator is my 3 row that I had recored, so that should work... the rocheters have the vintage speed progressive linkage.. I will see how it all works...

Expert Posts: 2478 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | I'd rip that half inch off the adaptors and as much as I could (is there almost an inch there?) from the manifold if I was you... Use Sikaflex if necessary. It's okay for manifolds.

Expert Posts: 2478 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | Same it's not dual plane... Sikaflex is the stuff windscreens are glued in with... roof panels are glued on with it. One race team here had to polish out an inlet manifold to get it cleaned up, they couldn't do it without cutting it open. They stuck it back together with Sikaflex.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 585 Location: SE Arizona | "....Same it's not dual plane..." (Shame?) Their really not too bad of a manifold, but the Offenhausers can be a bit touchier to dial in. Hopefully the guys who built the carbs already have them at least pretty close. Altitude/temp changes can make a big difference on jetting these as well as distributor advance curves. I suspect you will defiantly want to run synchronized linkage with the small base carbs on it or upgrade to a large base center carb to run progressive linkage. See what happens. I've have a bit of experience dialing these in, it can be a bit frustrating sometimes, but there's nothing like it when you kick it and everything's right. Don't worry about the old wives tales concerning KEEPING them in tune.... once their right they stay that way at (least with Rochester's). These are all my current tri-power motors. The Ch**y (also an Offenhauser) was run on a several different motors over the years, and had to be re-setup on each. The BB Ford (also set up with Rochester's) was run for years on my 61 Bird and that design was a lot less pickier to get right, it's currently in my 64 full-size. The Hemi set up is still a couple of months away from being fired in the 57 Plymouth, and I really interested to see how that one does. Like I said I've done this before, and if there's any help I can give you let me know. Expert Posts: 2478 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | Don't look like it from this side of the world... Dual plane feeds front and rear cylinders on one side of the engine along with the centre two from the other side from on plenum, and the others from the other plenum. Like the one you didn't use. I know, it's probably not as important as some other things, but it's just another thing in seeking perfection.

Expert Posts: 2478 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | That doesn't make it a 'dual plane'... The purpose of dual plane manifolds is to feed cylinders that fire in even sequence, to keep the flow through the carbies constant and better metered. So with that setup as described, it feeds four cylinders that are in sequence as every second firing from one side of the carbies, the other four are similarly in sequence for the alternate firings. Here's a description of what I'm saying from a site I just looked up: "Dual Plane: Dual plane manifolds have shown to be more throttle and torque responsive at low and mid range rpm levels than most (but not all) single plane manifold designs. Cross-H manifolds are typical examples of these manifolds. Each half of the (usually 4 barrel) carburetor is isolated from the other - and from the other half of the manifold- by the plenum divider. Manifold passages are arranged so successive cylinders in the firing order draw from one plane - then the other. In a 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order, cylinders 1, 4, 6, 7 draw from one manifold plane and half of the carburettor. 8, 3, 5, 2 are supplied from the other plane and side of the carburettor. Because there is less air to "activate" during each inlet pulse, throttle response is crisper and mid range torque is improved." Here's an example from a '56 Poly... see how it's an under and over setup? (56polyairgapmanifold.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 56polyairgapmanifold.jpg (21KB - 210 downloads)

Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | Well, I have fired it! Confirmed I have oil pressure, and I am ready to finish it up... I could only run it for maybe 15 seconds at a crack because I have to adjust the idle, but wow! Sounds good through open manifolds.....
