If you are running seriously rich I'd be more worried about diluting the oil with gas than blackening it with soot. Don't let this happen to you! I've been there and I'm still nervous everytime I start the car.

Thanks for a lot of good input from the list but I think Paul "hit the nail
on the head." I am running very rich as I need a carburetor rebuild that I
have been procrastinating on. This is additional incentive to get my carburator
rebuilt soon!
