RE: IML: '68 Multiplex Illustrated

Your mention of metal kick panels confuses me - do you mean the door
structure? The kick panels are plastic, but no speakers are used there.
(They wouldn't fit anyway, with the HVAC hardware in there)

The front speakers do not mount in the kick panels - they mount in the doors
only. My write-up in the IML 68 pages shows the speaker mounting in the
doors from both sides of the panel. The door speakers are small, but of
very high quality. In a closed car, with good rear 6X9 speakers, the sound
quality is superb! I'm not sure how it will work out in a convertible.

There is a third "hole filler" front speaker in the center of the dash,
which is the same unit as used with the non-stereo radio. The two rear seat
speakers shown must have come from a non-convertible.

We had a discussion on the IML about a year ago as to what to do in a
convertible to get the rear speaker hooked up, but I don't recall the
answer. There is a member with a 68 with stereo, but I forget his name.
If yours had the 8 track, you should already have the door speakers and the
rear speaker setup, though.

It appears you got the whole thing - these have run on eBay a couple of
times, but they always seem to be missing one or more parts. I bought one
that had a (wrong) non-stereo fader control, and no equalization network,
but your setup appears to be complete. Congratulations!

There isn't any special procedure to test it - just plug all the components
together, ground each of the electronic boxes, plug in the antenna, and it
should play for you. You'll need a fairly strong station to get good stereo
(these are antiques, after all!). There is a stereo indicator light in the
top center bar of the tuner to tell you when you have a stereo broadcast
tuned in.

Subject: IML: '68 Multiplex Illustrated

I was lucky enough to win a 1968 Multiplex system on
eBay. I hope to install the system in my '68 Crown
convertible, which should be a nice distraction from
the '73 and its little problems. (I'll write about
that another time.)

The convertible originally came with an AM radio and
8-track stereo. The 8-track is missing, so I thought I
would upgrade to Multiplex if I could find a donor
system.

Have a look at my new treasure at:
http://www.duricy.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=68multiplex

While the convertible has wires and mounts at the
doors for Multiplex speakers, it does not have holes
through the metal kick panels. I'll have to cut. Do
the speakers sink through a square hole so that the
ribs of the kick panel look tidy?

I plan to re-use the convertible's existing rear
speaker, and I'll have to figure out the tie-off the
manual shows for the missing 2nd rear speaker the
convertible lacks.

I'd appreciate any tips on how to test the system
prior to installation.

Enjoy the pictures.
