RE: IML: "Overhaulin" my 1970

Hey Kenyon,

Sounds like a fun project. I've done some mild mods on 440s. Unless you want the look or the whine, a blower won't be necessary. You can get 500 hp out of a 440 without going too wild. I think the Moparts tech section has a bunch of recipes. My family has had a '70 'cuda with the hp 440 since I'm 3. The idle is not too rough, just a slight rump. Stone stock hp 1970 440 was 375 hp that's a good starting place. Open up the exhaust, a little head work and your up over 400 hp. You might want to stay away from headers based on leak concerns or look for TTIs. Might want to try Indy or Eddy heads, but they and the TTIs get spendy. The Gearvendors right off tells me it's not a budget project.

Based on the weight of an Imperial I wouldn't go too crazy with the cam. Your rear should be fine, (they are 8 3/4, right?)but you may want a little more gear. My '83 has a mildly higher stall converter (supposedly from a '70 340 car-it's a small block) and I can't stand it, but I'm used to manuals.

There are a few members that do a lot of performance stuff (Rob McCall?) I'm sure they'll chime in.

Good luck and take lots of pictures.

Rob

Above all, I want long-term durability and
street-worthiness, as I plan to keep the car for
decades, not as a project to be done and forgotten
about.

Thoughts?
