Re: IML: Painting Your Imperial

I'm heading out this week to find a shop to paint my 60 Crown, I don't think it will be Maaco.  I had my 80 NYer 5th Ave done at the local Maaco last year.  They were real excited about doing such an unique car.  The NYer had no rust but it also had no paint and a number of parking lot dings.  I removed all the chrome myself and they were to remove the dings.  $1400 later, I got my car back.  Paint job is pretty nice and it's not a clear coat finish.  The only problem was the length of time it took for them to do it (3 months) and several large door dings weren't removed and now the stick out like a zit on the end of your nose.  When I questioned why the didn't remove them they said they had maxxed out on the amount of body work they estimated.  A phone call would have been nice, but that would have required some independent thought.  Bottom line, if you use Maaco, be prepared to manage the job,,,keep on top of it yourself.  Don't let them apply the paint until you're satisfied the prep work is done completely and properly.  If I ever take another car to them, I'll be there every night to make sure the car is ready for the paint booth.
By the way, the NYer is Dark Walnut Metallic, very dark.  I'd rate the application very good to excellent.

I know my '65 Coupe could use a new coat of Mauve Metallic (661) but there are other things more important at the time.

As for Maaco, sure it won't cost much for the paint job but ... that doesn't include all the prep that's needed -- any body work, etc. ***I used to work with a guy that had his truck done at Maaco and you could see the outline of the bumper sticker that they painted over.

Eric,
I had my 64 Crown done by Miracle Auto Painting in Stockton CA. I was very pleased wit job. I would suggest you visit the different shops an! d look at a finished product. They should have a couple in various stages of finish to so you can see the process. If they won't let you see that then I would move on. I also agree that going to black you would be very unhappy. shops like Miracle & Maaco do so much painting they are pretty good at it. I had a bad experience  I had a bad Experience with Earl Scheib  awhile back, so I wouldn't personally recommend them, According to the Sacramento Phoinr book you have 5 Maaco's and 5 Miracle's to choose from. Good luck & keep us updated
