The only likely reason gear oil would be present at that spot is if it is over full. Differential level can be checked by opening the plug on the side of the pumpkin. The level should be even with the hole.
 
Your leak is probably brake fluid from the tee, the lines, or the flex hose. All of this should be inspected and repaired/replaced.

RE: my vent/relief on my '56:  should there even be one at the rear axle, or should there be just the tee fitting for the brake lines................we were concerned it is supposed to be there and is to provide relief in the event of excessive pressure from the brake system:  can/should it be eliminated???
