Re: IML: 65 A/C Question....

Just a note.   Around here (in NC) I can rent a recovery unit and this will save the freon. then after the repairs are done you can put the freon back in. there is even a filter the rental company sells with the pump to help clean/condition the reused freon.  this way too you don't vent the R12.

I have had the exact opposite experience. The expansion valve has been bad on every old Imperial system (1960 through 1965 cars) that I have had repaired since the 1970's. The first one I discovered this on was my '65.  It must be discharged to service it, but if the system is full of gas and it still doesn't work, that could be it. I think that I recall that one way to tell if it is giving trouble is if the lines are cold up to it, but not after it.

Hi,
Yes, you would have to open the system to replace or clean that valve, but in my experience they are rarely
the culprit. Don't open up the system until all other possibilities are exhausted. Any bubbles are bad...suggest you have the hi and lo pressure on the system checked,
an easy job with the proper gauges and manifold.
This might be just a problem with the baffles ( moving panels/doors ) in this fancy system, if the "door"
is closed on the evaporator ( under the dash ) you won't get any air flow past the evaporator and hence
no cold air. Is the fan running ? Probably the same fan for both heating and cooling, just the baffle
controls the air flow. You can call me if you like, I do a lot of A/C  work on older cars, and my Dad had
a number of these from the late 50's up to the early 80's, I worked on most of them at one time or another.

Subject: IML: 65 A/C Question....

Hello Group:

I have an A/C question that I couldn't find the answer to while looking through the archives, repair sections, or in my own National Service Data manual.

My 65's A/C system goes through all the proper motions, but I am not getting cool air inside the car.  I suspect that the expansion valve may be the culprit.  The TEV is cold, the line leading into the plenum is frosty, and there are just a few bubbles in the site glass.  I checked out the heater core valve (?)  and it closes and opens as it should when the temp lever is moved, the compressor is running, starting, and sounding as it should.....

I have read about cleaning a screen in the Exp. Valve, but I would need more specifics on how to do that.. would I need to have the system evacuated?

One last small question:  There is a knob by the driver's left knee that says floor air.  When the car is not running I can turn that knob but nothing really happens, when I start the car and turn on the ac the knob turns itself to the left towards the floorboard, and while the car is running I cannot budge it left or right..... what exactly does floor air do, and is this something contributing to no cool air?

Thanks everyone,
Eric
