Re: IML: Problem with 1960 wiper motor (variable speed)

1960 Imperial wipers are capable of doing a lot of strange things.  This is because there are a lot of features related to them, mostly due to the Co-ordinated Washer System. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that the next time you started the car, the wipers began to function again, possibly without activating the switch, or corrected themselves altogether!

I am not an engineer, or an electronics wizard, but I believe that I can assure you that the problem lies in the switch mechanism and not the motor. That is where the various features of the system tie together. I will not go through all of the symptoms of trouble I have experienced with this over the years, but I have 2 '60 Imperials and they have both done many things to me. All of them have been related to the switch, and most have specifically related to the washer. The park feature can also give trouble, but usually is related to dirty switch or connections.

For the time being, I recommend leaving the switch in the off position. As I mentioned, the wipers may do something even if the switch is left alone. I also recommend that you purchase a couple of switches from one of our Imperial parts suppliers. An NOS one would be great, but I think you may have to settle for used ones. Changing the switch isn't difficult, but pay attention to the connections. I think that one of them is incorrectly represented in the wiring diagram. Keep the old switch as I think it can be rebuilt.

I have also seen 1960 Imperials that have been fitted with the newer style switch & washer system, such as in 1962, which is simplified by eliminating the vacuum related component and is not coordinated.

We can study this further off list if you have more questions.

Subject: IML: Problem with 1960 wiper motor (variable speed)

Hi Imperialists,

I would like to ask your opinion with regard to my wiper motor/switch
assembly.
It suddenly stopped working and I have had problems before when switching
off the wipers. Instead of stopping the wiperblades, they weren't parked
into park position but continue to wipe :)

After switching on and off a couple of times they returned into park
position. Yesterday I was surprised by some light rain (I normally don't
drive my 60 in the rain!) and when I switched on the wipers nothing
happened...

>From the FSM I learned that there is a replacable circuit breaker at the B
terminal of the switch ???? (when you have variable wiper speed, which was
standard in the Crown and Le Baron I believe).
However I doubt if this circuit breaker is at fault cause the trouble
started with a wiper motor that won't stop after it was switched off...

No I ended up with a wiper system that doesn't work at all :(

Any thoughts? (Dick or Paul maybe??)

Thanks a lot in advance,

Robert
