Re: IML: crankshaft pulley repair and an unstable idle.

Quick diagnosis, for timing/ distributor wear, timing chain/gears,/ carb.problems. Start with easiest first: After the engine is warm, 160 or more, remove air cleaner, and manualy close the choke blade, very slowly. If the engine idle stabilizes, its lean. adjust mixture screws, if you can't get idle right, carb  probably  needs work If engine slows, but still runs eratic, timing / distributor is next. Disconnect vacuum line@ dist. Put your timing light on #1 and look at timing mark , if it's jumping around , dist. weights,or springs and bushing could be the problem. If dist. passes inspection , then timing chain and gears could be worn . If thats the case your getting dirty.

Hi, Rob --

If the balancer has slipped that would cause a permanent and unchanging shift in the timing.  A fluctuating idle is generally a sign of a vacuum leak or carburetor trouble or both, but do not kill yourself looking for it until you are certain your ignition system is up to par.  Less common but with the same symptom, if your timing chain has not been replaced in the last 50,000 miles it is suspect and may have stretched.  Fix the electrical stuff first, because that's what makes the spark happen, then look for reasons why it does not happen at the time it is supposed to.
